Roden 1:72 SE5a

not the easiest of kits. i increased the 'pain and suffering' by using the PART P.E. set. decals are crap (i used Pegasus roundels).
everything is not as it seems. nothing is aligned, the right elevator is warped and there is about 5 oz. of CA glue liberally distributed about the airframe. other then that i can't remember when i had sooo much fun!

Looks good to me! Really nice job on the double flying wires, what did you use for the rigging?

Ooooohhh! Ahhhhh! *gazes at it drooling*

Wonderfully done, it looks like 1/48 scale. I wish I could do it and make it look half as good as yours. Everybody tells me Roden kit is a dog, and I concur. Can you give us a detailed breakdown step by step of how did you build it?

I want to know if you built it first, and painted second, and at what stage you added the rigging.

Some questions:

How did you make the control horns? I put one on the rudder of my Revell kit posted on the other thread, and decided the hassle was not worth it, but look forward to try again in next kit. I drilled a hole, put a tiny strand of fine wire through it, cut the excess and glued the cables on top of it.

How did you do the padding of the cockpit rim? Epoxi putty?

How did you cut the windscreen and applied it in place? I always have the problem with cyanocrilate "clouding" the plastic.

How did you achieve the shading effect of the ribs?

Nicely done. I found the Roden kit to be bit rough, myself, and being as the SE-5 is not one of my favorites, I found it easy to re-shelve. Still you brought out the best qualities through your own workmanship.

What glue? I don't see any glue...

thank you all. some answers.
rigging is .002 monofilament, painted with a dark grey enamel paint marker (i cut a slit into the felt tip and run the mono through that.)
control horns are from the PART P.E. set. holes are drilled into the top and bottom of the wing and a hole is drilled through the ailerons. i start at the top, glue the mono into the wing then pull it tight and glue it to the top control horn. thread it through the ailerons, glue it to the bottom control horn, then trim it as close as i can to fit into the bottom wing. slack is tightened by applying heat (i use a butane soldering 'wand', set on low). it's the basic technique i use to rig the whole airframe.
the cockpit padding is as Roden molded it, i painted it using Vallejo acrylics, which tend to be thick out of the bottle.
the shading is just my being undecided with which hue i wanted to use for the PC10, green or brown. i used both, then lightened them up, thinned them with about 70% thinner and sprayed streaks across the wings. final weathering is done with a very thin spray of Tamiya black/red brown. exhaust are weathered with Mig Productions pigments.
a few more pics....
