Disaster
Hi folks,
Haven't been around for quite a while, remember me, with the 41 1:72 scale collection?
Well, I purchased a beautiful curio cabinet to put them all in and, while modifying some pins to add an extra shelf, disaster ensued; the shelf fell onto the other shelf underneath that contained: MVR's Albatros DV, Rene Fonck's Spad IX, Bishop's Snipe, Udet's DVII, Mannock's SE5 and Collishaw's 1-1/2 Strutter.....all crushed I wanted to die, that's 3 months of my life on that shelf.)
Top wings and struts crushed and undercarriages also. Already repaired MVR's, Fonck's, Bishop's and Udet's(minus the rigging). The other 2 will be tough as their struts and undercarriages were snapped in multiple places; I'll have to do alot of scratch building on those.....Life just happens I guess.

OUCH! My sympathies... Thats why I put each one in its own sealed case. If you drop it you know where all the parts are. If you drop something on the case the model is untouched.

I feel your pain
That hurts. I had similar (cleaning lady meets display cabinet) and the repair job reminded me of how patient I was in the old days. The 1:72 Avro 504 was tricky in getting the wing struts lined up and the wings straight as the glue dried. But it's a good op to re-acquaint oneself with old friends.

And let's not forget kittycats... Watch that rigging and claws!

Gaah!
I have never, never been able to repair a model once it's been damaged, not with the same results as before.
I hope you have better luck, or more skill, whatever the case may be.

No, they will never be the same, but none of my friends or guests know a Fokker Dr1 from a Spitfire, so they will never notice .....but dang, I'll know

I've moved often, and lost many models due to it. Many models...
I feel for you, as only someone who's been there can.
Re-work is never as fun as a primary build, too; that's just part of the vile frustration of these situations.

Why re-work? This is an amazing excuse your wife can't deny! "Honey! I need some new models, as the old ones just got broken!" Go for broke old man! Buy some exquisite new stuff, and charge it to LIFE Happens! JW

Good Lord! I'm sorry this happened to you. Still, I think it's increadible that you built those models to such a high level in only three months. It took me more than a year to complete my last model (of course, we had a baby in that time).

I've read a lot about modelers who make their own struts using "Strutz" brass material. Have you used that before?
Regards, and good luck!

Thanks
No, I've never used that. I'll probably make them out of stretched sprue, have some experience with it.
I will finish repairing them soon and will post pics of their new home in the cabinet. It's quite nice, has a left-right sliding front door that locks with a key so my friends' little kids can't touch.
