Razzle Dazzle

Greetings all youz katz and kittyz;
Now that school is back in session, here is your first homework assignment. Everyone take that 1/48 Eduard Sopwith Camel from the top of your stash and accurately paint this scheme. First prize is a gold star and a bucket of Camel drool.

Same here, if you would, Stephan. [email protected]

I happen to have a small stash of Camels laying around, and the main reason I didn't want to build them is because of the multitude of all green paint schemes.

Thanks
Chris

The bottom of the sheet says 'L.P. Coombes'...instructor...1918. So this would be a personal mount of the teacher, and probably not flown in combat. Just a guess.

From the Factory on the hill,
John

Greetings all;
Already there are some rumblings about copyright. Remember its not a problem if you get the artist's permission. But if anyone here finds it offensive I will have to request its removal.

It was the personal mount of Lawerence Percival Coombes when he was instructing at 204 Training Depot Station at Eastchurch.

See both the current Cross & Cockade (vol 37 no.2 2006) and vol 7 no.3 1976 (an article titled "Coombes Colourful Camel").

There are some differences of opinion regarding the interpretation of the colours!!!

Coombes flew with Naval 10 and there is a photograph of him standing in front of a striped camel - whether he flew a striped machine or not is uncertain - however, he clearly tried to incorporate the Naval 10 humbug stripes into the dazzle design - very effectively I would say!

As per Mike's posting, an alternative of this scheme is shown at: http://www.crossandcockade.com/pdf/Camels.pdf#search=%22coombes'%20colourful%20camel% 22

Mmmmmm, camel drool.

That scheme definitely makes sense for an instructor with RNAS experience; scale it up (or down for modeling) and it would be perfect looking on a ship.

Heck with that, I've got a Roden kit just starting the paint stages, stalled because there aren't any markings inspiring me. What do I win for doing it in 1/72?
