Pfalz D.IIIa (1/72 Roden) - finished

Here are a few photos of my recently finished model. It is the plane flown by Karl Degelow from Jasta 40 in the Summer of 1918. To the Roden kit I added the Part PE elements and several scratch details like fuel and radiator pipes.

Hi Przemol,

Ltn. Karl Degelow's Pfalz D.IIIa has been on my "to build list".
I actually started it some time ago, but have packed most things away because of busyness!
Very Nice! I like the fuel lines and photoetched machine guns. The markings/colors make an attractive machine.
Clean looking rigging. What did you use?

How did you like building the Roden?
Any problems to be aware of?
How were the decals?

Thanks for sharing, FOKKERJ

Thanks for your patience to my models... Especially to you, Ross
FokkerJ: This is a typical Roden kit. When you pass through filling and sanding of fuselage elements and fuselage-lower wing joint and drill out the strut sockets with properly chosen drill diameter you are at home. Part PE elements fit perfectly the kit, only minor sanding of fuselage interior was required after the internal structure imitation was removed.
FokkerJ and Sreiko: I use elastic thread for rigging. One pulled from worn out stockings my wife kindly donated to my modelling workshop. I pull it through a drop of plastic cement between my fingers, keep it tight until the cement is dried and the material is ready. It is nicely deformable, and has small stiffness which does not require large forces to tighten it. Hence no danger of deformation to the delicate plastic structure. The only problem is cleaning up the holes on the upper wings. In the case of Pfalz it was not so bad, there are some PE parts over each strut which covered the holes for rigging. Only four holes needed to be filled - I do it with semi-dried paint and then delicatley sand it with very fine paper. Usually a cover of final varnish is enough to mask the mess.

FokkerJ, I have forgotten to answer about decals. In this kit they were of the new Roden's type - reacted perfectly to Mikrosol liquid.

Thumbs up Congratulations

Hi Przemol,
This seems to be an outstanding piece of work. Congratulations. Most wonderful details around the engine, and beautiful machine guns.
Getting results like this in such a small scale never cease to amaze me.

Thanks for showing us this,
Kofoed
