This is the way I solved the problem of the weak landing gear on my Albatros.Because it was a diorama I just put the weight on saw horses supporting the wings. There are also screws embedded inside the wheels which attach to nuts under the floor.

Most interesting John. What would you recommend to do with the instrumnt panel metal details , gauges, even the plumbing and fittings behind it?

Hi Stephen! The latest thing that I have heard about is using the brass portholes from ship models for the instrument casing. The ones I saw(I forget where) looked really good and they must come in various sizes.
Years ago I bought a whole sheet of various instrument faces in 1/12 scale at a hobby store that specializes in RC stuff.I just change the scale with a good quality copier.I glue the face on the instrument and then apply a gloss medium over it or the stuff the RR guys use to make windows.Just be sure to spray lacquer the paper faces both front and back before installation . I paint my gauges using my standard laquer ,gesso, acrylic paint method.
For the plumbing I usually use copper wire of various gauges and some cloth or plastic covered stuff for cable such as the tack.If you wanted to get super-detailed with the plumbing you could use a brass nut(from RR suppliers)where the cable or tube joins the instrument.
I have seen these tubes and cables placed both in front or behind the instrument panel.
Model Expo seems to supply various qualities of instrument cases depending on which kit you buy.

I do assume you are referring to these John..?
They are made from brass portholes, indeed available in different sizes, also suitable for 1/16th scale.
