But hey, like you, man that 25 buck plus all that sales tax, I mean that could buy, like you know, 1/2 a hot dog for each of my ten kids. And like you know I can't buy the book with those food stamps.

The scrapyard sounds fascinating (I've thought along those lines myself). *Unfortunately I can't get into that part of his webpage...Derelict aircraft are a fascinating diorama topic.

It seems there was a fellow modeler (and Canadian if I'm not mistaken) by the name of Mr.Constant (I think he also passed away a couple of years ago.) This fellow had some of his models displayed in Finescale Modeler. He did spectacular scratchbuilt 1/16 cutaways. He had been in the RCAF as a mechanic and built these WWII aircraft cutaways. The part I do remember is it may only be the forward fuselage sections and wing stubs.

Pop Quiz:*Does a diorama need figures to be a diorama? *If so, according to who? *If not, then according to who?
The answer to the Pop Quiz is no. *The major elements of a Diorama are:
A. Vehicle, i.e. aircraft, wheeled carriers, cars, trucks, fueling carts and etc.
B. Figures
C. Ground Work.
D. Story Line Content, i.e. historical, humorous, photographic or conjectured.
Of these the most important is the story line and how well the other elements interact with it. Damage to, or the condition of, a vehicle can tell the whole story or at least bring the greater visual impact to the diorama *
First you start with well built kits - basics , basics basics!!! *Then the modeler must pay attention - focus on how to combine the individual pieces together in a whole story.
IPMS Judges don't always look *for whats historically correct but do respond to the human condition. *Shep Payne says that one should not work to duplicate a photograph. *In either case the most important concern to an IPMS Judge is that it must make visual sense. *Judges don't like to guess what a story line is, so you have to make it plain and simple in most cases.

In the above image from 'Projeckt Riesenflugzeug II' we see a section of the diorama containing a circle of spectators with the centrally located 'lil girl' holding the 'circus strong man's barbells' over her head. The 'Strong man' is in the lower right of the corner wiping his head with a hankerchief boasting to the crowd.
The elements of this are
A. the barbells.
B. the girl, the strong man,and the crowd.
C. the ground work.
D. humorous story line.
Due to the size, this diorama is apart of the overall larger collection of othe mini dioramas making the whole viable or acceptable as an interpretation of a human event.

Making a scene look 'Candid' is the intangable fusion of pieces and their apparant interaction with each other.
The Sage, Shep Payne tells us don't jamb too much together. *Turn it on angle to the base, posing ground vehicles with front wheels turned outward, like a wagon or a truck. Windows half open (or half *closed if your one of those types.) *Most of these work well of single model entries but they are particularly applicable to dioramas. Next, Judges look for the blending of terrain and vehicles, buildings roads and etc. *In the event of a tie in a particular event the winner would be who in the Judges mind is the more spectacular or closer to being a candid representation.
