I dont belong to a club,and do very rarely build to a theme.But if i can look at a model on a shelf and get a quiet glow of pride....then I have built it correctly.
|
And that's all that matters, Andy. I stand in the background and laugh at all the contest judge Nazis haggling over this and that "correct" detail.... I could care less.

Sorry teach! I'm late for class.
This is a really terrific thread. Love the universal themes that have been running through it. It's amazing how we have all suffered through the identical trials.
Stephen,
You should think about putting out a little pamphlet on the subject to be sold in hobby shops. It would have to be small and cheap. Maybe two or three dollars. Your initial post was a brilliant exposition of the modeling experience.
On Retirement: You may have more time to build but you also have more time to do research. As Stephen has pointed out, this puts a definite drag on your building. Then you have the problem of finding out your built models are in error and have to be torn apart and rebuilt, a much more difficult process than doing a new kit.
A Satisfying Model: One that's already built to your satisfaction and you haven't found any reference to indicate it's inaccurate....yet.

Hi Ross;
My hairline is NOT receding!
The Tripe is now in several pieces. I have split it open to salvage the cockpit detail and the modified tailplane has also been taken off.
Next step will be to (properly this time) thin out the new (kit 2) fuselage walls so everything fits. Then its back to building the damm thing again...All the good bits from build one - struts etc I'm keeping...
See Dear Readers - Even a tireless fighter against AMS such as myself have my demons to fight - mine comes in the form of a Eduard Sopwith Triplane...
Mmmm...Supaglue.....
All the Best

Doctor Neil,
please help me! Are the nuts that hold the ignition leads to the sparkplugs on a Mercedes DIII hexagonal or knurled? and how should I fit them in 1/32?
Richard
....I know, better make two sets and screw in the appropriate sparkplug when I find out.....I wonder what the plug gap should be...

@ Doc Neil E,
I see you have risen in th community here to have your own personality cult going. Wow the Supaglue does have a good effect.
I take it the Tripe will have the same markings as you planned for the first one ?

Dear Richard;
I seem to recall a simialr debate between two patients at the institute that I observed while on my rounds the other day...
Richard; just bear with me while I ask you a question...I refer to this question as the "Dymphna Challenge".
When your Venerable Great-Aunt Dymphna comes to visit and admires the finished Mercedes D-III (which airframe do you have in by the way?), will she be able to tell whether the hexagons or the knurls are correct? Will she notice them at all when, after peering at the finished product, she turns and says.....
"Lovely colours Darling" ?
and if she does see them, will she even care if they are wrong?
Also are these details visible? As I said in an earlier post..."How can I admire your details, if I can't see them?"
Now, back to the two gentlemen resident on Ward 3b...how did we resolve their nut debate...Simple solution...shock treatment!
Both patients were taken to a small room with a very bright light, each was given an Esci Nieuport 17, all their references were taken away. They were given each a (blunt) No 11 blade, a pair of tweezers, a tube of glue, and three Revell paints and told to complete the kits in one hour.
One completed the kit in time and is happier for doing so - he hasn't mentioned nuts since. The other, well, he is in Intensive Care at the Institute after he drank the Revell paint after sniffing the glue...A sad case...he will need more intensive therapy....
All the Best
