Claudio- That is correct. The lower removable panel fitted under the bent back firewall panel at the front and was notched in front to clear the landing gear struts and bracing wires. It extended aft of the lower spar and closed out the hole where the lower wing was fitted to the fuselage. Into the large removable panel was fitted an aluminum door, piano hinged with square edges at the front and round edges at the back. This panel was secured by Fokker nuts about 2/3rds of the way towards the rear of the hinged panel. Engine access was provided by the hinged panel and lower wing mount access was provided by the large panel. The large panel was also secured by Fokker nuts.

To get panel details correct, you must first understand how a panel functions and why it was put there. This is difficult for company modelers with limited access to photographs.

Your drawing looks good.

Thanks a lot Taz!
I had never noticed that the removable panel covered the lower wing spar and looking at the picture you posted earlier in this thread I noticed something else: The "cut out" for the aft landing gear strut was in the lower wing root and not in the fuselage like most of the kits have it (check out the picture of my 1/32 Fokker).
It's me or the fasteners were not located symmetrically?
I am re-drawing my previous sketch to add other details.

Best regards,

Claudio

Claudio,

Regarding the bottom wing root "cut out" for the aft landing gear strut, here is my Dr.I drawing of this detail shown correctly from the top view looking down.

Gary- Thanks, looks very good.

Claudio- There were actually six Fokker fasteners aft of the maintenance panel instead of the four you show on your drawing. Look at the photo I posted and you will see the six symmetrical Fokker fasteners, arranged to stabilize the large panel so the hinged maintenance panel had a solid base.

Hi,

With two Dragon triplanes and one Eduard Albatros V (and II) in the stash, I'll wait for the singleton Eduard triplane, or just do with my Dragons. This offering smacks too much of crass commercialism. Eduard should just have put the G-- D--- triplane on the market and be done with it: the decal sheet would have been as much a draw as the model. My two cents worth! Rant over!

Thanks Gary I will modify the kit to match your drawing.
Taz, I re-drew my previous sketch and I added the missing fasteners, it's Ok now?

Claudio- By Jove, I think you have it just right. All those little dark spots in the photo I posted are Fokker nuts.

Terry,
Would you happen to have a close up of a fokker nut?
Cheers,
Bob

Bob- Here you go. The repro builders are big on these. See Gary beat me to it. Note the nuts were designed to be snugged up against the panels they fastened by being offset just slightly so the threaded end of the fastener against the panel was the same height as the fattest part of the conical end.
