Lozenge decals

Hello Steve,

I'm sending you a FULL set so that you'll be able to build a proper Staaken. The sets are done now so you'll also have the colour chart.

This set is designed solely for the Staakens though.

Now, Sheet No. 2 which is coming in about 2 - 3 weeks will be 5 Colour Night Scheme specific for Gotha's. Yes, Gotha's or more specifically Gotha G. Va and b's! We think you're going to love them!

The 3rd sheet to come will be 4-colour Night Scheme and should be her in June if Vickie and I burn the midnight oil.

Sheet No. 4 will be Naval Hex post April 3rd 1918. This is the skewed pattern.

All will be in 1/72nd. After we've got these out, we will be putting out the next sheets in 1/48. So please just be patient. They are coming.

I'll send those along Steve, as soon as they arrive.

Cheers

From what I've seen on your site, the colors look great to my mind's eye. But, I'm a little confused. The site states that it is night printed lozenge, but I can't see a repeat in the pattern that differentiates the bolts. Is it actually supposed to represent the hand painted night lozenge or am I just not seeing the repeat?

Thanks,
Dan

5 colour WWI German lozenge Camouflage 1/72

I began application of the Orion decals during the evening of May 21. These sheets (8 9/16" X 5 15/16") are smaller than the old Americal sheets (8" X 10") but they represent the painted look of the Staaken lozenges very well. The 4 step instructions suggest that you should apply a gloss coat first and when dry apply the water slide decals over this.

As with most modern German lozenge decals the base carrier of this sheet is clear. Normally this allows for the decal to be reversed for interior cockpit walls. If these represented printed lozenge that would be ok but they don't. The Staaken fabric on 17 of 18 machines was painted. So the interior wall would be CDL (Clear Doped Linen) in most cases.

Never the less these decals adhere in high quality. They easily replace anything in 1/72 scale for German 1918 Bombers that has come before.

My wing panels is drying at this moment so I should have an image or two to share soon. I used one sheet and had plenty left over to do half of a second wing panel. You will have eight wing panels to do and the four fuselage sides and dual whale tail w/whale tail and rudders. To do a whole Staaken there won't be much to spare out of the 6 sheets you will get in the purchase. So the builder will need to plan their work carefully.

The instructions recommend Micro Sol & Set and so do I. More to come.

Colours of the polygons

Thanks for posting the photos Stephen. On my screen the colours look mostly shades of gray except for one dark grayish blue colour. Is that how they look to you? Isn't there meant to be a dark cactus green in there somewhere? Not to mention the other colours I don't recall right now. I was expected more, well, colour even if dark.
Regards
James

Greetings Jamo;

I can confirm the presence of 5 separate colours here and add the reminder from the website that this sheet fits certain colours used ". . .for all German Night Fighter, Bomber and Reconnaissance Aircraft in service after January 1918. These include Friedrichshafen, Gotha, A.E.G., LVG, SSW, Hannover and Albatros built Staaken aircraft. These sheets are also applicable to Staaken 'L' Planes 8202 and 8203.. . ."

I also agree that this would have to be occassions where the lozenges were painted on the finished airframes parts NOT the factory printed fabric. There is no repeat except on the long edges to match sheet applications for area that the decal mybe cut too short for the areas it was fitted for.

The quotation above is from page 1 here. As for the colour intrepretations I'll leave that for Derry Fitzgerald to explain. By the way I have no financial connection to the production of these sheets and have only been asked to review them and their use on plastic kits.

Staaken Lozenge

Hi Stephen and Jamo,

The colours are 5 Colour and are actual depictions of the colours cited on our colour chart for 5 Colour Painted Scheme. They are TONED to suit 1/72nd and are lightened so that you can see the actual colours. Stand 6 feet away from the wing Stephen and you can see the colours really take on individual hues. Exactly like the real thing. The Mauve really stands out particularly well as does the Prussian Blue and Midnight Blue/Black. All in scale.

By the way, you'll have company with the Staaken build Stephen; Helmut in Germany and David in Geneva and Tom in Western Australia and I are all building our Staakens and will post photos on-line. This is truly an International Group Build!

Whoever else wants to get in, step up to the plate now!

Because it's Staaken Time Ladies and Gentlemen!

As we say around the shop here; "It's too SLICK!"

Cheers

Derry
