Hello, John,

Thank you, sir, for your very kind compliment. From a modeller of your abilities, a very kind compliment indeed, and much appreciated.

This is from my 1/32nd Roden Fokker Triplane. Mainly the Testors Rubber, very thinned, with just a touch of Smoke on the cylinders.

That is a spectacular engine, trackpad! Wow.

So was it Smoke with a little bit of Rubber, or Rubber with a little bit of Smoke?

Hi, Crosshair,

Thanks for your kind compliment! I used well-thinned Smoke on the cylinders (my preferred thinner for acrylics is 99% rubbing alcohol and a 1:1 mixing ratio), and thinned Rubber on the crankcase (2 parts thinner (Lacquer thinner) to 1 part paint). Best to spray a bit at a time, and build up the colour to the level you like.

I had not heard of Iwik's idea of colour tinting the finish, but it sounds very good and I'll be trying it in the near future.

I should also say that I first used Alclad II for the engine, to get the initial metallic finish, and then oversprayed the respective parts as described above. Hope this helps!

Thanks again for all the advice. I went with a simple coat of Tamiya X-19 Smoke, and it has made a big difference to the Clerget:

Highslide JS

Now, on to the wings!

Hi, Crosshair,

Looks very good, sir: well done! Good luck with the wings, and the overall build. Please keep posting photos. I've always had an interest in this model!

Thanks! I'm building a magnetic clamping system, like this one, for the job. I got the steel for that yesterday and will move ahead this weekend.

Good work so far Crosshair,
one comment if I may... the push rods look too big for the cylinders. Not sure if the cylinders are too small or the pushrods are oversized, but looking at the Revell 1/28 scale Camel's engine they look a lot thinner. May be a flaw with the kit and not worth changing especially if the push rods are correct and the cylinders are too small!
Well good luck with the build.

Thanks. That's 1/16-inch brass rod, per the kit. I suppose it does look a bit heavy. If that's the worst flaw I end up with, I will be happy!

Cool. glad to hear that you are happy with the engine, it still looks very nice and I can't wait to see the fuselage and wings!
