Instrument Panel

I'm back onto my Camel. I'll have wing photos soon, but for now have a look at her instrument panel:

The Model Expo castings were pretty good, with the exception of the compass. It came with a turn-and-bank arc attached to it, but this impinged upon the altimeter below it. I filed the turn-and-bank away. I've had a look at various prototype instrument panels, and it seems the turn-and-bank ball appeared in various places on the panel, so I may try to fabricate one later.

Progress on this model has been slowed by moving house and by the arrival of my splendid son:

He's named Roland, which I thought you lot would appreciate. My wife wouldn't let me name him Spandau or Albatros.

Upper wing soon!

Roland

Middle name Walfisch or Haifisch? Congrats, your life is about to get a LOT better, even if more complicated..........John

Thanks, everyone. I hope the children (Roland is our second) turn out better than my aircraft models!

Clamping

I'm using neodymium magnets as clamps in adding caps to the many wing ribs. I find that this technique is both faster and more accurate than the traditional pin method.

I am really pleased with the magnets. I bought two of Leigh Valley's assortments for USD 15 each, and that's plenty for now.

I will probably make some fixtures like Paul Johnson's at some point.

I have also learned that my spray-paint finish on the steel plate is easily scratched. I think gun blue or a powder coat is the way to go there.

And to answer your question: The model is challenging me, but I am enjoying the build process. That's the idea, I suppose!

Suppose it shows one is never to old to learn
