Is it true that Eduard will not be releasing anymore new WW1 subjects in the mid to long term? I've heard they are concentrating on 1/32 WW2 subjects from now on.

Please tell me I'm dreaming....

Ugh, that's a little maddening - really? Won't people ever get sick of the endless stream of Bf109s, Focke-Wulfs, A6Ms, and P51s?

I was in the local hobby store last week, and they had 3 WWI kits in a rather huge aisle chock-full of WWII planes and armor, some cars, and a bunch of modern jet aircraft and armor, with a few battleship kits at the end and a rather huge section of little 1/35 scale WWII figures.

The three WWI kits in the entire store were one really crappy-looking Testors Spad and two Revell Camels.

Eduard's talents are badly needed to turn this stuff around, but it looks like in my two local shops Eduard doesn't even exist. Maybe it's endemic in shops across the world; I don't know. I know WWI is considered a niche market, but it's not exactly being helped where I am by the local shops.

Charlie,
I'm rather lucky to be living close to one of the best model shops in the UK. Hannants London, is bang next door to the RAF museum Hendon. They have a good selection of WW1 subjects from many manufacturers. So, take heart, not all model shops have abandoned WW1... for now.

Now you know why Squadron, Sprue Bros, Roll Models etc., are in the mail order business!

Charlie,

The hobby shop clesest to me stocks no Eduard, but I can think of four in Melbourne that have extensive stocks of Eduard, Roden, Special Hobby, etc.
And if all else fails, I just phone the good folk at Snowy Mountains Hobbies and tell them what I want (they even stock Aeroclub and Blue Max), If they have it in stock, it is generally in my post box a couple of days later!

Don't stress over Eduard, the rumour of them moving away from WWI has been around for a while, and I would not be at all surpirsed to find out that it is just another marketing ploy.

Roden will hold the end up for us.

Cheers,

Hugh

Thanks for the cheer-up, gentlemen.

I do get a lot of stuff from Sprue Brothers now because they ship almost instantly and are usually cheaper than Squadron. They're also more consistent about not sending catalogs in the mail when I ask them not to. I don't have a problem with availability of kits or anything.

I just wish the local stores would consider throwing some of this stuff on their shelves to maybe boost popularity, and I would hate to see a company like Eduard drop their great WWI kits in favor of the same-old same-old, even if they can improve on it. I get the most fun out of assembling the Eduard stuff because it is so pain-free most of the time.

I've only ever done one Roden kit, Degelow's D.VII, and that thing gave me nightmares just to put together compared to the current Eduard D.VII, despite clear superiority in certain ways. I'm also lazy to a big degree, so the PE frets Eduard sells with their kits (and separately) are definitely up my alley. A weekend edition Alb. D.III plus the D.III fret will only cost a little over $20 and put together a very nice little model with some TLC.

It's not just this stuff either. I love the Gunze and Alclad products, for example, and they're not at either of my LHSs either. Tamiya and Testors seem to rule the day on any paints I might want to pick up on the fly.
