In between the Roden SE 5a kits (1/48 & 1/32) I have started pressing further attention to this project. I am building the wing spars and altering the kit fuselage parts to take the spars. The wings having already been started.

Also, I am using the "Flight" CD discs for further information.

I have picked up a second Junkers D.I kit (short fuselage.) You will remember the "Flight Magazine" images I put up earlier.

Here is my effort Though I have tried to add a bit of strength to the application.

This angle from the front view. Already I see I will have to go back and repair a bent truss.

Here is a bit of fun note that have removed a portion of the fuselage side wall at the wing root. Also I will have to repair the cockpit framing for the bulk head and seat supports.

Great thread.
This may be of interest. In the confusing parlance of Jukers aircraft it's either a J4 (Junkers) or J1 (IAS).

Starboard wing root of the centre section, upper wing. Hopefully the angle helps. Easiest to remember that the inner, folded, 'C' channel and outer round tubes provide 3 dimensional triangulation. Great space frame design.

Regards,
John

Thanks John. As you said a "great space frame design." (Space in this instance meaning the space within the wing cellule. Not outer.)

Ok here is where it gets good. Here is my build up of the interior basics with a couple of modifications.

Here is the installation of the cockpit and pilot's left wing with the truss spars. The wing spar truss works are to be slipped in the corresponding angled slots created by the wing truss works.

Hi Stephen,
Nice work. I built the Blue Max kit around 10 years ago when it was the only game in town. Boy Roden has sure made an improvement, especially the interior detail. Couple of things that seem odd, don't have all my references now to look at. Was the seat corrugated like that or did it have a artificial leather cover? seems the corrugations would not be too comfortable for a back rest. Also shouldn't the inner cockpit walls be corrugated? Strange the seat would not be smooth but the sidewalls would be. The wing spars/trusses look great. Keep up the good work.

Greetings Dave;

The seat back was corrugated but probably had some type of covering. Your are right in your assumptions concerning the sidewalls. I added a couple of scribed lines and get by with saying the cockpit was armoured. The truth is it should be corrugated too.

Otherwise one will have to rease everything and take it down and add .010 thou plastic styrene rod to simulate the corrugations.

Now for the choice of engine. Since the Junker Company (Jco) did not geta BMW IIIa assigned to them until Sept. 1918 I went for the Mercedes installation. Below are some options and a bit of fun. The 260hp was too large and never done but is wide enought to be accpted in the kit airframe. The Roden 180hp with the stand up air pump is a choice and the Pavla 200hp with the horizontal pump is another.
