Just to give you something to chew on. The possibility exists that the aircraft was black and white. The argument for red and white has a tradition in the history of the red and white barber pole not the candy cane. During the middle ages barbers and dentists were the same profession. The bloody rags that these common doctors used were washed (usually in lye soap but not always) and to dry they were wrapped around a white staff outside the estabishment as a "sign" of the type of work you could get done inside its doors.

Black and red look exactly the same in the wwi era photographs, so I don't see why it wouldn't be possible, unless there's some first hand accounts of the a/c.

Either way, it would look really cool....
