support vehicles
Does anyone make any 1/48 models of support vehicles, like a model t ambulance? I have searched for something that could be reworked into something suitable, but the oldest vehicle model I can find is a 1930s truck.

Vehicles
Hi Kurt,
That is a very good question! I have often wondered the same thing. I don't think there are many available in kit form, although I don't know for sure. I am of this opinion only because I don't see them very often, if at all. I actually have the remains of an original "RAF Type" truck / lorry, and I think that the vehicles are just as interesting as the aeroplanes in many ways. Original vehicles are relatively easy to find, and there are many parts still around, compared to aeroplanes of the time.

I went crazy trying to find a WWI era German truck a while back to do a diorama of a photo I saw of a Fokker E.III being towed with everything in it's "for shipping" configuration. I had no luck at all.
I did come across these from AJP Maquettes and they may be helpful. Not cheap by anybody's standards, and I have no idea of the quality, but right now, that's all I found. I think I could have tried to convert one of the Daimler trucks to work for me, but if I was going to do a lot of scratching, I didn't want to spend what they were asking.

In railroad scales, O comes very close to 1/48 (1/45, I think), so you may be able to find something from the rail stores. Some of their higher end vehicles are very, very nice.
If you do find anything, please let us all know.

Chris,
I did some time in On30, and the first place I looked was all the RR sites I could think of and I was really suprised to find nothing. HO has a ton of things that could be used. The thing I guess will be the biggest problem would be wheels and tires. I thought for sure there would be a Model T or a Stanley Steamer around. Just gonna have to keep looking.

I'm on a business trip... I just got back from Germany and I'll be in the DC area for another week and a half. With all the inauguration stuff, I feel like I'm pretty much trapped in my hotel, so I'll dig around too. I'd like to find some of the same stuff as well.

Bam! Several styles of Model Ts.... and though they're listed for O scale, it says they're true 1/48.
They also have a bunch of shop equipment, like compressors, wrenches, c-clamps, even buckets and tool boxes.

Chris,
I did come across those and they do have potential. I first I thought they were a bit pricy to bash, but Ive spent more on less. I wish they were plastic, but they do look nice. Probably will get one and see what I can come up with.

I thought they were a bit pricey too, but at least they look nice...
I'd really like to find a decent priced German truck, but I'm not having much luck.
I'll keep trying to find more stuff. I can't believe there's nothing in the $20 or less price range. I have a friend/modeler that owns a railroad shop in Colorado. I'll email him and see if he knows of anything.

Chris,
Have you seen this site before. Landships - A site for WW1 Military Modelling
They have a few nice photos and some nice plans for several trucks among other vehicles. Gotta drag those crashed birds and pilots home.

Very cool...I did see a really nice truck, but in 1/72 scale. Maybe I'll do the diorama in 1/72.....
This came back from my buddy with the railroad shop...
:I found this site with 1/56th scale WWI stuff.
WW1 Tanks and Vehicles: Brigade Games and Hobby Supply, LLP
K-line trains had some old time vehicles in the past that were 1/48 so you might try e-bay with the tag K-line.
The other idea is to hit Caboose Hobbies as they have tons of “o” scale kits and parts in 1/48th. Walthers trains might have a few on linealso.
Hope this helps
Dekker"
I'd have to see the 1/56 (28mm) stuff in person to see how out of scale it'd look. Seems like it probably wouldn't work.
Caboose is a big railroad shop in Denver, so that doesn't help you much and I haven't checked about the K-line stuff.
Maybe we should just man up and scratch a truck....that's why they made sheet styrene and stock....
