Hi everyone, i am new to this site. i came across it looking for information on World War 1 aircraft for a school report. i found all that i needed and a forum about models, which is great. i love building models. anyway, i have always wanted to build a world war 1 airplane, but never really seemed to get around to doing one. anyway, i was wondering if anyone could recomend a good kit. it doesnt have to be easy, i'm not new to modeling. just new to world war 1 aircraft. and also, maybe a good place to buy some online? i have a hard enough time finding hobby shops and stores that even sell model cars, i dont think i will have any luck finding a world war 1 plane. thanks for the help.

Srbass;
I agree with Ross, Eduard is the best with Rodan a close second. If your fairly new at model building I suggest a Monogram SE-5 Fokker D-VII, or Sopwith Camel.

Welcome.
This is a great site. It is made up of very nice people who take a very serious and scholarly interest in the subject.
I presume from your mention of a school report that you are an adolescent. All the better. I am gratified to see a youth taking an interest in what is for most of us here a favorite subject.
Now to answer your question; Now is the golden age of WW I modeling. Many manufacturers make great kits of WW I aircraft. Go to the Squadron Shop website and you will find what you want. There are many other fine online hobby stores, Rosemont Hobby Shop being one of my favorites, but Squadron is huge, therefore less expensive and quick.
Look at the Roden brand kits. they are the best buy for the money. They make a series of Fokker DVIIs which is my choice for a starter kit as it requires almost no rigging, which is what scares many off of WW I planes. The Roden kits come with a good choice of markings too, so you have lots of choices for accurate color schemes if that is what you want.
Hope this helps,
Terry Crisp

Agree with Terry 100%. Have you gone to The WWl Modeling Page? They have lists of suppliers that can be accessed on the WEB and all sorts of helpful information. Also have lots and lots of photos of completed models in all scales that would give you a pretty good idea of what you might want to build. Good luck. Great to have you aboard.

SRBassist109: Welcome young sir! *Allow me to chime in with my fellow forumites singing the praises of *1/48 Eduard, DML/Dragon, Lone Star, et al!

And lest I be castigated for slighting them the 1/72 scale manufacturers Roden , Mac, Toko and Hawkeye!

In 1/32 we have Battleaxe & Hobby Craft. There are others you have but to perusue the scholarly pages that are at your fingertips scroll down and Wahlah!

As good firsts the kits I recommend Eduard's 1/48 Nieuport 11 kit #8069 or 8070, Nieuport 17 any of their issues, Albatros D.V #8109 or 8110.

My Gallery
There are some good kits of some more rare plane types (at least others don't make them) available through Squadron.com, I believe they are under the name "Chech Masters" ?? They are 1/72 scale kits of some planes you probably would not find anywhere else. I built their Junkers J1, I have yet to put together their W 12 and Sal 2. They are nice kits but most with no decals. Not as fine of plastic as kits like Roden or Eduard.

Try 1/48th scale first. And start with an in expense kit. Squadron has great prices and fast delivery. Good luck. Love the WWI aircraft.

Any Kit in my kit stash is a good kit!

But seriously, I think that the Revell 1/48 re-releases - the Se5a and the Fokker D-VII would make good first time World War One Aero kits. They are accurate enough for a beginner with some scope for detailing, and are straight forward builds - in the case of the Fokker D-VII no rigging, and the Se5a comes with rigging instructions and cotton thread for rigging (please please don't use this though....) As they are well known aircraft, there will be lots of aftermarket decals available too (particularly for the Fokker D-VII).

They are also inexpensive kits that will suit your budget too. Being Revell they will be available just about anywhere.

HTH

All the Best

Neil
