I have tried Mister-Kit's colour of silver-gray , but it seems too gray to my eyes - although its hard to be dogmatic about these colours.

Look at Stephen Lawson's Pfalz - thats about the colour it should be.

Guy;

I agree with you. IMHO I think Stephen has it about right.

What's your mix for Silbergrau Stephen? (please)

All the Best

Neil

Barker,
you like my Pfalz? Great, nice to hear.
( If I am the only Hans in this wide world who ever made a Pfalz.....)

The original Pfalz were painted with a aluminium pigmented dope which is still on the (german) market and called 'Silberbronze'. It's still in use if mild heat resistant is nee-ded. But there a better products on the market and I think it will dissapear soon.

This silberbronze has a pure matt aluminium sheen, if viewed from the near. It gets (light) greyer the farer you move away. Due do its receipt ( cellulose dope + alu pig-ments) it's somewhat hard to paint, brushmarks are evident, which correspondents with some english reports on captured Pfalz. And it changes the hue due to the base, which may be a explanation to different shades of wooden fuselages and fabric wings which can be seen on Pfalz photos.

My receipt for a 1/48 model was realised with Tamiya acrylics. 80% alu matt, 20% Gloss white, plus a dash gloss black. In 1/72 I used more white and black to make it more gray ( scale effect).

Yours,
Hans

Hi Hans-

Yes I did like your Pfalz.

The thing about mixing 'silver' with a white or a light grey is the way the metal dust suspends in the mix when painted on. Straight silver would be just that and seems to lack the depth that you cite in the original mix of cellulose & alu-pigment. Can see the spot of black you add as the lampblack of the thing, yes?
Scimitar: Am familiar with MisterKit paints and use them. It is also interesting to mix one's own. I agree with Hans' 'scale effect' mix and MisterKit doesn't always suit my tastes, fwiw. I like their various CDL's but do not like their Fokker turquoise, for example. Tinkering with colors is fun. Beyond an exact sample (good luck), choice is somewhat subjective, given good research.

regards,
Ken

Thanks for the precisions, Ken. In fact, I've never tried that reference of MisterKit. Gived it to help. I own an Eduard 1/48th scale Pfalz D III, but still "in reserve". So that discussion is really interrestive for me. Thanks to all of you!

Greetings all:

I too have experimented with several methods of applying a SilberGraü. *Yet my favorite method of replicating it is simply run very fine sanding film over the area that isoriginally supposed to be wood. *Simulated fabric areas need no prepping.

Then spray the areas with Testors Metalizer buffing aluminum and then when dry spray that area with dull coat. Go back after the clear flat is dry *and wipe away the dull coat from the areas that are supposed to be metal with a clean brush partially dipped in clean thinner. *No scrubbing here and no need to load the brush. *It gives me a good representation between polished metal and silbergraü in 1/48 and smaller scales. To further accenuate the metal areas run a wash of black in all its crevaces.*Try it on a scrap piece of plastic
