Hello, did the Austrian's go through the whole war using maltese crosses or did they adopt they mid-late war German "square" and "rectangular" Balkan crosses?

Yes, the Austrians did use 'straight arm' crosses, but much later than the Germans. In the period August-October, both a wide cross (apparently overpainting the earlier eisernkreuz) and a narrow cross were used.

Order introducing "Balkenkreuze" (not "balkAn") in Austro-Hungarian Aviation was issued 31st July 1918. It contained general cross drawing, which lead to so called "Fat Crossess Mistake". This drawing showed "fat" cross with wide white outline, and many units took it literaly. But High Command's intention was to copy German crosses, so quickly the 'fat' ones were replaced by thin crosses.
But also war ended quicly too, so there are not so many photographs of the planes with straight crosses.
Ask for more, if you like!
Also search the net, start here:

Cheers!
