Depending on the scale, an interesting material to use is electric guitar strings. I've used those in the past and of course they are the correct material too. You can heat them up to expand them and then cyano them in place whilst they are warm, then when they cool down they contract and are taut. Try .008 top E lead guitar strings for small scale stuff, it looks pretty convincing.
