A few more photos & some Photo-Etch prep

OK here we are still moving along ever so slowly....but moving along...hmmm I wonder if I can make the November 14 target date???? Just a few more shots of the fuselage/wings/tail assembly nothing is glued yet except of course the wings to fuselage.....

Lower Vickers still needs a few bits added....

Prep-ed photo-etched parts after a dip in Blacken it....The photo with flash makes these look very dark....the fittings are very dark, but the spoked wheels are almost a silvery metallic color (you can alter the color by the time left in the solution) But one word of caution as I found out the hard way DO NOT LEAVE your etched parts in the solution longer than the recommended time as it will eat it away............Blacken it & Patina it can be found at any good Model Train shop & maybe even online....even if you plan to paint your photo-etched parts it makes for a great base for the paint to stick to!

I must apologize for the photos as I am just learning on that little contraption!

Greetings Ken,

Just a bit of a head's up for the readers. "Blacken-it" is great BUT when you have the patina surface you want rub the part or submerge it in Baking soda. This neutralizes the acid etching. Then wash in cool water and pat dry with a paper towel. If you don't neutralize the acid the residue will continue to act even under a coat of paint. This stuff is designed for Model Rail Road projects where the etched metal and metal parts are a bit more heavy duty. They often use a primer then a lacquer coat of paint. With our delicate WWI materials keep these things in mind and you will do ok.

Thanks Stephen...

Exactly you must remove it completely from all the surfaces of the brass or it will continue to do its work...as I said before I found this out hard way once when I took the parts from the blacken it & dried them off (Thinking I removed all of said solution) put them in a little container for safe keeping only to find them almost dissolved at a later date...LOL

Nest we have a jig and man what a jig we have

Hello all...I must first thank John from Aeroclub for this fantastic little contraption ...The Aeroclub biplane jig....this is my first experience with mine...after breaking down & forking out the cash for one....I must say I have no idea how I got along with out one....this thing is really NICE! If any of you are thinking about getting one of these...al I can say is they are worth every penny............Nice....nice nice....oh yeah did I say nice?

a few photos of everything squared up & ready to go once I get the 28 painted! The only thing I'm thinking about adding to the jig is some wire insulation coating to keep it from marring the painted surfaces.....any ideas?

Ken

I would think that heat-shrink tube would be one option.

Hey Bill,

Yes, eyeball Mk.II was OK when I was 20 but it still led to much cussing & animals running for safety and almost some unauthorized flights of said models! But this thing really is the cats meow for biplane building....it's a bit fiddly until you get it all tightened up....which I will still need to make final adjustments before anything gets glue not to mention a whole paint job......Hey Silly Putty to the rescue......... It is time to try that trick out!

As far as November 14th goes it is a regional here in Mesa at the Confederate Air Force Museum, sorry I can never remember the new name????
To Walsh is also building a Nieuport (17) in 1/32nd scale so keeping fingers crossed that we can both get these puppies finished in time!

Thanks for the kind words Bill...& start posting your stuff here on the Aerodrome Buddy!
