Three interesting WWI models are depicted in the May 2002 issue of Model Aviation.

On page 18, there's a radio control Fokker Dr.I in a very attractive black and yellow scheme, a welcome change from the usual MvR all-red livery.

On page 130 are a pair of free flight models, a diesel-powered Sopwith Camel and an RAF BE12, type of power not specified. The latter is described as a particularly good flyer, not surprising given that the actual BE12 was too stable for its own good. The detailing on it is excellent.

Hi Roundel,
Yes, it is an excellent issue for us WWI modelers...that Dr.I you mentioned was built and flown by a friend and fellow member of my club here in Tampa, and it was (sadly no more) an excellent flyer. *He is now building a 1/3 scale version, so it should fly even better than that one. *The Ernst Kessler color scheme from The Great Waldo Pepper is a real eye-catcher, for sure.
Plus there were some neat building tips such as using Windex on wings still on the board to take out any warping...a good issue!

That free flight Camel is now available as a kit from:
Dare Design and Engineering
P O Box 521 Cumberland MD 21501
800-578-3273.

It's 1/8 scale. It also appeared as a plan feature in Aeromodeller several years ago.

They have Morane Saulnier L to same scale. Both were designed for diesels...probably Mills 1.3cc or PAW 1.5cc or similar.

Lyle:

Thanks for the comments. *I haven't seen The Great Waldo Pepper in many years, so I didn't recognize the paint scheme on the Dr.I. *My sister and I saw it when it first came out and we left feeling rather unsatisfied, as have a number of other people. *The film's screenwriter, William Goldman, has written that he now feels that the story took some wrong turns.

Please send us a picture of the new Dr.I when it's finished.

DaveErrol:

The engine in the Camel is indeed a 1.49cc PAW diesel. *Dare has been producing some very interesting items lately. *Maybe they'll get around to issuing their electric control line P-36.
