Color photographs of beautiful static models of the Airco DH-2 and Bristol Fighter can be found in the "Small Talk" section of the May 2002 issue of Flying Models, p. 70. *The text describes them as 1/16 scale models built by Dr. John L. Derhammer from Cleveland plans. *
That same section discusses the use of corrugated polypropylene in the construction of model airplanes. *This material is similar to corrugated cardboard, but substitutes polypropylene sheets for kraft paper. *My understanding is that the greyish open top boxes used by U.S. Postal Service letter carriers are made of it.
Model airplanes made from corrugated cardboard have been around for at least 30 years. *I believe that Flying Models offers plans for cardboard models of the Spad XIII and an early OX-5-powered Curtiss Robin. *
The polypropylene model depicted in the current issue of Flying Models is a WWII PT-19 with a P-51-style canopy. *Not explained is why the modeler didn't just build a PT-26, which was the PT-19 with a "greenhouse" canopy.
