Chip, Tom, the WWI modelers mailing list voted the Merlin Salmson the worst ever On Topic (OT) plastic kit and they get no argument from me. I am on record on another thread as saying that no kit is IMO irredeemable, but this one pushes the envelope *

Chip, cool down. Of course the members of WWI list handled both. The Glencoe Pfalz comes from the former Aurora moulds and several samples can be found on the model pic site. For a stunning sample of Glencoe's AH Albatros see this:

You see, some modelers can make fascinating things out of a piece of plastic, chewing gum and a tooth paste tube.

Yours
Hans

I had a motto when I was not yet working on the full size things :

"It is not important what you have...It is important what you do from what you have!"

I chain this first with any Revell kit that I have ever built, because what you get is far away from what it should look at the end. Twisted pieces, grates all around.... you know what I mean.

They must have had beautiful kits in the sixties and seventies, but when I was a kid building them it seemed like they just brought out new kits using the old moulds whithout cleaning them even up.

Well, my worst biplane model ever built was a polish model kit of a Breguet 14.

The kit I liked most was this Dragon 1/48 Fokker Triplane!

Bye!

Chip, I have an Aurora Pfalz DIIIa (same mould) sitting in my display case and it looks splendid. It takes a little work but there is a jewel in there I promise. The Merlin Salmson is quite a different matter however. If you have one in your modeling tool kit I recommend removing the parts from the sprue with a blow torch *

All;
Any kit looks pretty bad after I build it. The only thing I have improved at since I was 10 years old is now I do apply paint!
The worst kits I have seen were the Glencoe Albatros. I really like the Pfalz D-3 they make!

Thanks Ginger!

I did actually not catch the meaning of that sentence until you laughed out loud here!

(I had to admit that I was forced to open my english dictionary to find out what "blow torch" is.)

Greetings from Germany to all!

I notice in the February/March Windsock that Ray Rimmell is awarding a Merlin Salmson for the lead letter in the hints and tips section. Presumably those whose letters are not published will be sent two Merlin Salmsons and told to buck thier ideas up *

I hate to admit it but I'm old enough to have built all those
"old" Aurora kits back in the 1950's when they were new...
As a friend of mine said "they were good for their time". Now,
however, I would say the most vexing kits are from Aeroclub and Blue Max. These are not bad or awful kits just very challenging to build. Just finished a Blue Max M1C Monoplane
and had numerous things to overcome, like the horseshoe
shaped cowling and a white metal interior that required major rework to get a correct fit... Oh well, they are still light years ahead of those old Aurora kits and their clones.
