Tips on painting Fokker EIII cowling
Hi Everyone,
I am getting ready to build Eduards Fokker EII/III in 1/48. I bet this has been asked before but howw have you painted the cowling? A base coat of gray with hand painted swirls of silver? Any pictures or links of a model WIP would be helpful. Thanks in advance

You could use matte aluminum Baremetal foil as a base, then brush on aluminum paint mixed with a little gray, in small strokes.

I did an E.IV years ago. I painted the overall metal area Model Master aluminum - the regular enamel paint not the metalizer. Then I did the squiggly lines with a fine pointed brush and used a mixture of chrome silver and dark gray till it looked good. Not exactly the correct colors of the turned metal but looks good to me.

I've successfully used SNJ spray metal for both engine turned aluminium (Sopwith Triplane) and the more random effect on Fokkers. I don't have any pictures and my Tripe didn't survive the last house move. The technique was to spray the SNJ as per instructions and then use the burnishing powder and a pointed felt polisher in a dremel. A series of regular close spots for engine turning and more freehand for the Fokkers, using just the tip of the polisher in both cases. Not an exact replica but a variation in shade and tone which gives the right effect, these were all in 1:48.

Is the SNJ still available? I have seen this used but have never been able to find the product and thought it was out of production a couple of years ago.

A base coat of a medium metallic with the swirls hand painted in silver worked fine for me, see example here:

I used Citadel Boltgun as the darker colour with Citadel Mithril Silver for the swirls. they look a bit clumsy in 1/72, they would be easier in 1/48 IMO.
Regards,
Nigel

Here's how I painted mine E.III cowling years ago...
I used Floquil silver (airbrushed) with the swoll effect painted in with a brush of the same silver darkened with grey.

cduckworths look the closest to the real deal to me, my technique looks practically identical, except i used humbrol metal cote aluminum painted with a fine brush over humbrol metal cote steel airbrushed, the trick is to use photos of the real thing and try to copy the pattern. a light wash of black helps to bring it together too,
