Fokker streaking, an idea

I tried this in the camo forum but it was suggested I try here, so here I am!

I apologise in advance if this has been discussed to death already, but I suddenly had an idea about painting Fokker streaking. I use the method for wood grain of dipping a small piece of sponge in some brown (basically) oil paint and streak it along a tan (again, basically) painted plastic. It's been working pretty good for me (finally, a tip I can actually make work)

It occures to me that if I used green oils over light blue paint, I could use this same method to do streaked camo on Dr.1s. Am I nuts (about this, anyway?) Has anyone tried it and, if so, what kind of results do you get?

Again, sorry if this has been done to death already, I haven't been keeping up on line much lately. Thanks for any help

Michael

It is an idea that has been discussed but it never hurts for a refresher. The green over lt. blue would however be a mistake as we have come to know. The base colour was an unbleached linen. Old Sail or dirty cream clour is best and of course. The lt. blue on the undersurfaces only. For my efforts see here.

And especially here.

Stephen!

Ah ha! Man, you're everywhere!

Sorry, guess I was thinking of the F.1 I'm doing, which I think it has been agreed was overall blue with streaking on the top and sides. Actual Dr.1s would be linen colored under the streaking.

But what about the described method?

Hi, Blue Devil,

I almost use your technique. However, I airbrush the beginning of the darker streaks onto the fabric, then use a flat brush to apply the final streaking. This takes a while, as I build it up over perhaps two or three applications. Here are two examples. The larger triplane was my first try, and I think that the final "look" is a bit too dark. But the technique replicates the original method of dope application, so I'll probably keep trialing it. Good luck with your modelling!

Except the streaking goes the other direction. Also the current information says that the preproduction F.I were covered in bleached linen not painted light blue over-all. Also the ailerons were done separately so the streaking rarely matched.

Arrgghh!! Now I have to repaint!

Oh well, that's the way the cookie crumbles. Thanks for the application ideas!

I think the streaking angle is reversed, the angle is off and it looks green not brown.

But I like the technique.

Brown?

how this then?

HA!....

I never thought to check the direction of the streak, I thought it was field applied - not factory ... no matter as this needs to be stripped and done again anyway as the oil is too thick in places and is leaving ridges.

I did try it on a white base, didn't look good, with the blue [duck egg blue really] it comes out much richer.

However - all in all, in the end the technique does work just fine Michael
