I think it was our very own Mr. Lawson who built a model of that Tripe?

When Kermit Weeks in Florida bought what was left of the Tallmantz Collection (late '80s?) he got the Triplane, the Camel, and the Stampe and Tiger Moths that were used for Waldo Pepper. Also a Standard J-1 and some of the other stuff. The Camel and Triplane went to Tony Bianchi in England, who still flies the Camel (recent Stella Artois beer commercial), but the Triplane was said to be poorly built, and ended up in a museum somewhere, seems like it was far away like Singapore or someplace like that.

The flying scenes in Waldo Pepper are nice, but I found the gallery of photos that scrolled by under the credits at the start of the film to be the most intriguing feature. It is, in essence, a dedication of the film to Ernst Udet, upon whom, I assume, the leading Germen ace character was based. Does anyone know why Udet is so much a part of this film??

Udet the greatest surviving German ace. Pepper's claim is to have been the greatest pilot never to have flown in WW1. In the climactic scene, Pepper gets his opportunity to go up against the best, von Richthofen not having survived. I imagine that's the reason. Mind you, I haven't seen the film since 1975.

Wink Re: Gallery of Photos

The photos used in the beginning and ending were recreated because when the director, I believe G.R.Hill was a child, he had made a scrapbook of famous fliers from the old days. He later lost this scrapbook, and that is why he did those photos in the film. As for using Ernst Udet as a central theme, between the wars, Udet was a movie flyer - and what better charachter to base Ernst Kessler on as the nemesis for Pepper to conquer his combat skill against while filming a flying flick! Flying magazine did a beautiful article on this flick when it came out in the mid 70's, and I remember reading this in there, a few other mags did some articles also - and I also remember reading that they stated that Robert Redford did his own wingwalking scenes! He confirmed this himself because I saw him interviewed on "Inside The Actors Studio" on BRAVO TV not too long ago and he was questioned about this, and yes - he said it himself that he was the wingwalker in those scenes!

Happy Landings,

PIET
