Aces High!!

I've recently seen ACES HIGH and I really enjoyed it.

I thought that it showed the true situation of the pilots in WW1 aerodromes well; and the flying scenes weren't bad!

What do you think?

Aces High is based on a play called 'Journey's End' by R.C. Sheriff.
The play is about disillusionment and how British Officers feel in the lead up to the big German offensive on 21st March 1918.
The Journey really is at an end because tomorrow Jerry 'comes over' and life (should it continue) will never be the same again.

I believe I once saw a TV play of Journey's End with the British actor David Warner in the lead role.
Never been able to track it down since though.

This would be the 1938 Flynn/Niven/Rathbone/Crisp version? The flyimg scenes are from the earlier 1930 version Barthelmess/Fairbanks jnr/Finlayson. I have only seen short excerpts from the 1930 version. The title of this was altered to 'Flight Commander' for TV. This latter title was that originally used by Monk Saunders in his original story.

I agree with your comments if it is the 1938 version, provided you get over the Marlin guns on the top wings and the fact that it is supposed to be 1915 and the guns are synchronised. I did enjoy it.

What was wrong with Aces High was that it was based on R c Sherrifs Journeys End. Sherriff incidentally was a very, very young infantry officer in 1918. He started writing plays to raise funds for his Rugby Club. Got the bug and managed to get JE produced at a Sunday Night performance in the West End.(Members Only)
Noel Coward in Present Laughter in a speech to the aspiring playwright; "You want to sit down and right ten plays one after the other and if you can get the tenth produced for a Sunday night performance,. You'll be dammed lucky."
More or less as I'm quoting from memory and Sherriff was 'Dam Lucky'. He wrote the film script for the Invisible Man and eventually 'The Dam Busters.'

I like JE. I imagine it's a bit dated now although there is an adaptation opf it on 'Up West' at the present time.
