Wow, I was about to throw in my two cents' worth, but you did it for me. I feel special. =P
Anyways. All these ideas you've been throwing around sound incredibly interesting. I'd love to read some of 'em.

Dwarf or a giant, what personal qualities enabled him to be the highest scoring scout pilot of WW 1 ? Raised in the military tradition with quasi noble status, he would have felt comfortable in his milieu and wouldn’t have lacked self confidence. Accustomed to command, apparently not a particularly good pilot but a good marksman, played the percentages thereby maximising the likelihood of victory and minimising the likelihood of defeat. Flew defensively. Pragmatic. He’d have made a good footy coach.

MvR and Boelcke are the prototypic squadron commanders. In my opinion MvR took over were Boelcke left off and actually took a poor squadron J11 and made it the best and then took fighter command a leap forward with JG1.
His story is that of German fighter aviation in WWI.

 ha. ha.
Burrows' book has him at 5'8" or so, but when comparing him to his brother, Lothar, who was about 6'1", the tallest I could put Blond, blue-eyed and silent would be at about 5'9". Don't think he was too much shorter than 5'8" - Remember, Ernst Udet at 5'3" thought he was a tall feller, and while being that vertically challenged does have a tendency to make everything seem taller, I don't think Shorty would have mentioned Manfred's height as being "tall" unless he was significantly taller than he was.
Imagine Udet's surprise when little brother Lothar walked into the room.
I can see it now. Breakfast on the first day with the Richthofen Geschwader. Udet helps himself to a cup of coffee. Lothar walks up and....
Lothar: "Hey, Shorty. Did ya know that coffee stunts your growth?"

Well, if you want a good picture of the height difference:
BTW, I'd always heard that Manfred was about 5'8" and Lothar about 5'11", while we're completely off the original topic. Although I think the whole point of this discussion started with "Right down to their respective heights, MvR and LvR were pretty good foils to one another." =P
And if any of the original starters of this thread get this far, I'm still interested in reading your script[s], even if it's just for my personal pleasure. I'd love to see what you guys have written. Just drop me a line via that personal messaging-thing.

The distorting effects of paralax, the background slope, Manfred standing on his tippy toes and Lothar slouching make it inclusive. Speculation on von Richthofen's hieght appears to involve as much imagination as the proposed film script.

If anyone is interested in reading it, I'd appreciate your feedback. I'm also looking for an agent, hint hint.

I'd be happy to have a look as well. Look for a PM from me. I'm a writer, and although I've never written anything in screenplay format, I'd be more than willing to offer my feedback on the storyline and such.
