The Fighting 69th, with James Cagney, was on TV (Turner Classic Movies) just a few nights ago. Nothing aeronautical, but some interesting ground action.

I have a favourite. Titled "Oh what a Lovely War" made in Britain in the the sixties and based on a stage play. Much of the screen adaptation was written by Len Deighton (though he walked away after some disagreement and removed his name from the credits). It has some wonderful sequences of songs from the war and a very anti-war stance.

I've not seen it but "Lafayette Escadrille" is reputedly a stinker as well.

Cheers,

I didn't think Von Richthofen and Brown was too bad, had some nice dogfighting scenes with a lot of action with two airfield attacks, only needed some better acting!

Hi,

Not an aviation film, but one of my favorites is the 1936 movie, "The Road to Glory", starring Fredric March, Warner Baxter and Lionel Barrymore. It's a very realistic depiction of the French Army and trench warfare, directed by Howard Hawks and co-written by William Faulkner (pretty good credentials); supposedly based on a previous French movie. Not available on DVD or VHS, but if you're lucky you might catch it on TCM; TNT used to show it occasionally. It has a very nasty attack across No-Man's Land, and a good look at life in the trenches. It even has a scene of French Poilus nervously listening to Germans tunneling underneath their dugout to plant a mine - the only depiction of this WWI tactic I've ever seen in a movie.

In many ways it follows some of the same themes as "Paths of Glory" and "A Very long Engagement".

Underrated, rarely shown early sound film about the Gallipoli disaster.

Actually that was a company. I think a whole division would've overwhelmed even Alvin York.
