I believe the airplane is an Udet U-12 "Flamingo". Pretty isn't it?
See here for some more info: http://www.histaviation.com/Udet_U-12.html
I didn't catch the venue where the film was taken. Udet did do some performances at the Nat'l Air Races in the US. Could this demo have been one of them?
I think there is a Flamingo repro. flying in Germany; saw pics. of it on the web somewhere. As I recall it's got a modern opposed engine, and may see some use as a glider tug.

Hi FliegerJG1,
Thanks for posting that link--some fantastic flying from Herr Udet and his Flamingo. My impression of Ernst was that he was an all-around nice guy with no presumption. Precisely the opposite of his "pal"--Fat Hermann.
Here's another video of his flying plus some candid shots of him with the ever-present zigarette. The Flamingo is sadly undermodelled, even though it was a great flying plane, as evidenced here. Enjoy!
Ernst Udet

The video is of Udet flying his Udet U-12b Flamingo, D-822, at the US National Air Races, Cleveland, 1932. This was Udet's personal acrobatic aircraft from 1926 to 1934 - it was written off in 1934, not by Udet, but by a ferry pilot trying to do a spectacular take-off...

Here's another with a hair rasing dead stick landing. Also a brief sound bite from Ernst Udet himself. Just be patient with the balloon footage at the beginning.
BTW, Listen carefully, you can hear the wires singing during his "dead stick loop".

Lyle, I took another look at the video in your last post. I think that's the first time I've seen Ernst without a lid. Until now I puzzled as to why Bo Brundin portrayed Ernst (Kessler) in The Great Waldo Pepper, with his thinning hair! I suppose I keep picturing Ernst Udet in his pre 1919 configuration.

The same series has a clip of Katherine Stinson, mere slipofagirl, in a sequence labled 1917 but her Jenny has a 1918 Balkenkreuz!

Hello everyone,
If anyone is interested in downloading this particular video, you can go to: http://www.archive.org/details/1933-..._Balloon_Title.
Also, the three Leni Riefenstahl/Ernst Udet movies ( The White Hell of Pitz Palu, Storm Over Mont Blanc, and S.O.S. Iceberg) are available on DVD from Kino International - http://www.kino.com/video/index.php.
