Criticism
Well, I AM a film critic, and have been doing it for something like three decades. You'll find that many "critics" sound off on a film not for what it is, but rather for what they perceive as its omissions. "Flyboys" seems to be exactly the movie its makers set out to create — a simple, semi-accurate and adventuresome account of the early days of air combat — and the only question is, did they succeed in their mission? I think, for the most part, they did.
I think the filmmakers' biggest mistakes were in marketing, not in the film itself.
It's interesting that such loathing for this film is stirred up in folks like Sandy. They're almost religious in their zealousness to destroy and discredit it. I don't know if that's because "Flyboys" didn't meet their high expectations or because they simply hate everything made for the average citizen-audience.
Variety's list of film "flops" is based on the ratio of earnings compared to cost, and has nothing to do with the perceived quality of the film. "Flyboys" is in the company of "A Good Year," "All the King's Men," "Lady in the Water," "Freedomland," "The Fountain" and other interesting films. Clint Eastwood's very acclaimed "Flags of Our Fathers" barely missed making the flops list.
Of the top-ten grossing films of 2006, four were animations and only two were non-comedies. In terms of dollars in vs. dollars out, the most "successful" film of 2006 was "Jackass II."
