pretty cool how you made the engine louder as it gets closer, then quieter as it goes away. and the gun sounds scared me!

Yeah, and how about that doppler effect? The pitch change really sells it, I think.

Sorry about the gun sounds. There will be gun sounds in this animation and, unfortunately, the story ends badly for one of these fine gentlemen.

Maybe I'll have an alternative ending and surprise EVERYONE.

The Doppler effect is great! - Did you get it by placing virtual microphones at the camera and adding the engine sound loops to the models?

Only a minor criticism: the camera should seem placed also on a plane, so it should also have its own movement. Maybe even some engine and wind noise from the "camera plane" would add to the realism.

There's a great free audio editor for Mac (and PC as well) called "Audacity". It allows for fades, pitch shifts, volume adjustments, etc. Once you have a steady engine noise that you can loop indefinitely it can be edited for particular scenes.

I'm thinking about having a number of camera options in this animation. I want to have the point of view of both pilots, the pov of a third camera plane, the pov of a fixed camera in the air (like this last example). I think I'll save the engine and wind noise for when the camera is in MvR's or Hawker's planes.

YouTube says that they support HD video. Once I move on to the final scenes I will probably begin working at 1290 x 720 so the finished work can be used for HD video. The way to get the high quality option on YouTube is just to upload high res video. I want everyone to see all of the work I put into these models!

360 Animation

I hope that I've found a decent way to present these animations. The best quality I've been able to come up with at a reasonable file size is Flash video. The Quicktime move of this animation was over 500MB, which is too big for my web server. The Flash video takes it down to 1.5MB with less degradation of the image than YouTube. Take a look:

http://www.backusstudio.com/aerodrome/360.swf

You'll notice that the video is scalable in your browser window. Find a size that is a good compromise between seeing the detail and the image getting too chunky. The animation will repeat but is not meant to be a loop. You'll see a jump as it repeats. No sound on this one.

Thanks WF2. I'll look into DivX and see what it has to offer.

For the time being, here are the first two animations stripped together and posted as Flash:

Happy Holidays Aerodromers!
