I'm sure that everyone here on the forum would be interested to hear any information that you are able to find regarding Lanoe Hawker, either as a man or a pilot. Any suppositions that the people on this site are only interested in WW1 pilots as victims or victors are entirely yours.

Is WW1 aviation really an interest of yours or did you just happen across this site and wonder how anyone could be interested in this material?

Hawker's brother Tyrrel wrote a biography about Lanoe, Hawker V.C, published 1965 by The Mitre Press, London, 253 pages. Mostly about his flying days but starts in their childhood together. Complete with toddler photos, personal letters, etc.

ww1 Aviation

Dear Michael. I will reply in further detail this evening. I need to mix up a batch of chocolate chip cookies for a friend. This friend coincidentally runs the best new /used bookstore in La Jolla--- one of his specialties is military history. But the short answer is yes and no. But I have around military history all of my life. And the knowledge my father has about early military aviation is quite extensive. He told me all about the early aces and the air war. Hey, I even named my Steiff Owl, Oswald Boelke. I think the point I wanted to make is that sooner or later we all bite the dust. It's poignant that no matter what Hawker did or did not do in is life, the only thing that seems notable is his last 8 minutes, and the manner of his death. And the person responsible. Jenny

Yes, unfortunately Lanoe Hawker has been overshadowed in history by other aces, from later in the war. He was a pioneer for sure, undoubtedly a very brave man, and Britain's first air combat hero.

One of the reasons this particular encounter interests me enough to do an animation of it is that Hawker was in every way vonRichthofen's equal. This was exactly the type of contest that MvR normally avoided due to the risks involved. It was just luck and possibly a superior aircraft that allowed him to come out on top.

Jim Miller is being kind enough to send a timeline and tactical analysis of this particular air battle. Between this and the reference from Dan-San and GregVan's book I should be in good shape to get started.

I'll post renders of the 3D models first as they are completed. Then it will be the process of putting them in the air. Thanks to all of those here on the Aerodrome supporting me in this endeavor!

The model construction on the DH2 is nearly complete. All that remains is to 'paint' or texture the model. This is the part I enjoy. MvR's DII should go pretty fast as I already have a decent DIII that I built to start with. Change the lower wing, flatten the sides of the fuselage some, and move the radiators to the sides of the fuselage and we're most of the way there.

I've had to steal time this last month due to having paying projects in. They will be done end of this week so it should be full throttle now. Stay tuned!

Thanks Beto. Always inspiring to see one of Mike O'Neal's beautiful oils.

I'm laboring away on the model of the DII at this very moment. I'm tempted to show bits in progress but I think I'll hold off until I feel it's done. I hope to post some still renders later on this week.

Thanks for checking in!
