If you recall, just prior to his flight.................
The General was very upset upon learning that the two kills claimed by Stachel in fact belong to Willie. High Command wanted Stachel court-martialed, which would ruin his name and honor and tarnish Germany as well.
The clever General saw a way to rid the service of a pilot that was no longer useful to his (the General's) cause. By assigning the "death flight", the General gave Stachel a glorious death while preserving his name (and Germany's) and getting rid of him at the same time, plus his wife wouldn't be shagging him anymore either.
So......I think he stamped something official on his file that stopped the court-martial proceeedings, yet gave him a hero's ending. Of course we don't see what was actually stamped, so it's left to speculation, but that is my guess.

I had always assumed the big heavy official looking stamp that came down with a thud was "deceased" or "closed" or something to that effect.

That the award of the Blue Max was official, supported by the Hollernzoren House (It was their coat of arms.)
". . .Holbach, give thias to the Field Marshal. It is the personal record of a German officer and a hero. . ."

Stachel's being dead was perhaps the only condition under which the general would grant his approval for decoration - for Willi's victory (I thought there was just one?), for shagging his wife, and mainly for the general cavalier attitude that Stachel had regarding the "way things were done"

You can't court martial a dead man.

Certification stamp.
Greetings all I have to correct a mistake of mine here. While the Hollerzoren eagle would be stamped on the award notification of the Blue Max. The personnel record of a German pilot would be stamped with the unit stamp he was serving with. The producer's evidently decided to combine this action but have the General apply the unit stamp instead of the award certification stamp. Below is the typical unit stamp (Jasta 5). Mea Culpa. I caught this while viewing the movie for the umpteenth time.
