Wunder des Fliegens - Ernst Udet

Someone has posted clips of Wunder des Fliegens on Youtube. Staring Ernst Udet, this propaganda film was aimed towards generating interest in the Luftwaffe. At about the 3 minute mark of clip 2 there is terrific footage of Udet flying his Curtis Hawk.

This is a great, marvelous movie (even the usual Nazi propaganda is a bit muted). I wish someone would release a good clear print of it on DVD. Wonderful flying scenes!!

My favorite part, though, is when Udet takes the wide-eyed youngster into the study of his Berlin apartment, and shows him all of his war trophies on the walls. Just to hear Udet mention his old "Geschwader Kommandeur... Richthofen" sent some chills up my spine, along with the brief footage they include of the Rittmeister. The camera pans lovingly over his wall of photos and memorabilia, giving us a tiny fleeting glimpse of that elusive photo of the Fokker D.VII with the striped upper wing!

Many thanks for posting these film clips Bruno... it's like watching all the post-war elements from Mein Fliegerleben come to life.

There was also this....

.... after viewing "Wunder des Fliegens" I came across a link to this,

YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.

A program from a documentary series "Hitler's Warriors". This particular episode is "Udet the Flyer" which is both interesting and odd. Udet's Great War service is given sparse treatment. A film and photograph of Boelcke are misidentified on two seperate occasions as Manfred von Richtohofen and then Udet. On the latter occasion Udet is then condemned as vain for having a photo of "himself" displaying the Pour le Merite!
A bit too much of a rush to condemn.

Note also the link to "Building an Albatross D.III".
