Red Baron
Having just viewed the movie in its entirety, I do not think that anyone who knows anything about Manfred's life and WWI aviation will enjoy this film. We know too much.
The night sky was never full of HP O/400s -- they lost contact when they took off and had to find their way to their targets in the dark, alone.
The Albatros and marking looked good, even the British markings I can live with as they had some basis in fact, even if they were stolen from the French in one case.
Were the civil markings on the Handley Pages an in-joke or slack research?
Just a pity that they did not make the movie BASED on Von R's career but without him being the principal character.
I also thought the CGI flying was too Gee-Whiz. It was not the Tie Fighter speeds of "Flyboys", but go to the "Blue Max" or Roger Corman's "Red Baron" to see how REAL planes fly. How they love the head on collision!
Pity the "making of" did not show more of how they built the aircraft, sets, etc, instead of a stream of outtakes from the film one had just viewed.
Not great, a big chance lost for a good WWI aviation action movie.

I got hold of a copy of this off the net (yeah, I know..) and it's the German version.
I've tried in vain to find subtitles on the net (I don't think anyone's done them yet), but what's the score with the non-availability of the English version?
From what I heard it was shot in English and German anyway.. Why has no English copy, legit or non, not surfaced yet?

Here are a few stills that came from the set in Czech Republic. I think these are just beautiful!

Annoyed yet again...
As a history fanatic and a movie fanatic as well, once again I'm greatly annoyed. WHY? Why does the movie industry have to take a magnificent true story and screw it all the the blazes for no good reason? The legit story of Von Richtofen is fantastic without embellishing it or making things up. Why can't ANYONE do a historical movie on a military subject without making it ridiculous?
It doubly annoys me when they have all the elements on the table to do a phenomenal movie, and they still can't, or won't do it. Computer graphics have changed movie making forever, but it may have completely ruined WWI aviation themed movies if film makers insist on relying on it. As we all know, WWI airplanes were slow, their aerobatic ability was extremely limited by today's standards, and they didn't fly in formations two feet apart from each other going 300 mph. The CG effects in this movie are not nearly as offensive to the senses as the scenes in "Flyboys" but they are absurd nonetheless.
As others have stated, modern film makers could learn much from watching The Blue Max a few times, The Battle of Britain, and a few other 1960's epics where models and actual machines were used with much better results. Granted, there were historical innacuracies in those movies as well, but the overall feel of the movies didn't leave you thinking you'd just watched a WWI movie that had been blended with Star Wars.
Danke!

So what you're saying, is if I tell my daughter to buy one, and ship it to dear ol' dad in the states; I won't be able to put it in the dvd player and watch it? Don't worry about the language thing as I enjoy watching "Das Boot" totally in German. The English version just loses something in the translation. What's this region 1 or 2 thing, and which one do I need for the states? JW

This is a good a place as anywhere....
....... to post this link, although I may be the last member at the forum to see it. Truthfully if this is representative of the film I find it intriguing, warts and all.

Zone 1 is US. Zone 2 is, I think, Europe.
You'll have no worries watching it.
