Search for Movie, WWI squadron

Hi there.

I remember a movie showed in danish television about 25 years ago, and even though I wasn't very old, some parts still appears in my memory. Therefore I hope that someone in this forum, can help me tracking this movie.

Description:
The film takes place in a German squadron, where a new recruit appears. Trough the film (I cant remember exactly) he turns out to be an Ace, with all his friends falling trough their missions. The clearest part of this movie i remember is the end, where our pilot waves to an other pilot, losing his focus, and then colliding an enemy aircraft, front to front. Afterwoods the squadron leader sees him walking back to the base, just to realise it is in his own mind, and the fact is that our hero has fallen.

I remember it as a German production. I remember it as a black-white film.

Can anyone help me tracking, by this description. Short and blurred, I know:-)

Thank you.

That´s what I would say, too. Aces High, British and in colour.
In fact a theatre play adopted to the cinemas.

Aces High sounds right. The new pilot is played by Malcolm McDowell, and the CO by Christopher Plummer. I don't believe it's available in Region 1 (US) DVD, but it was released on Region 2 (UK) DVD.

Malcolm McDowell played the drunken jaded squadron commander. Christopher Plummer is the kindly old adjutant.

You can watch Aces High, streaming here: Watch Aces High (1976) Online Free

by coincidence, that was just posted here today. Enjoy.
