BBC Timewatch

Hello,

A heads up for U.K. viewers, this Saturday night at 20:00 hrs on BBC2

Timewatch "Aces Falling"

"Edward Mannock VC and James McCudden VC rose from modest backgrounds to become two of Britain's greatest fighter aces in World War One.

As the number of their victories grew, so did their chances of dying in flames. Timewatch tells the story of their battle to survive against the odds, and of the 90-year-old mystery surrounding the death of one of them."

Cheers

PGH

Other folks depicted in this ...

Max Immelmann is mentioned by name, with still pictures.
Manfred von Richthofen is mentioned by name, with still pictures.
At around 30min 00s, there are two short consecutive sequences of archive footage showing German airmen, one of who may have been von Richthofen -- I wasn't looking too closely, I was too busy gawping at one of the others, an uncredited Hermann Göring.

This documentary dealt primarily with McCudden and Mannock. As such it didn't mention Albert Ball, Lanoe Hawker, Billy Bishop, René Fonck or Georges Guynemer, at all.

Thankfully the computer graphics weren't as ever-present as some documentaries.

Must say I quite liked it - although I'd welcome a whole series of these, and in more depth with programmes for each. Surely there's a series in this, considering the rich histories of many WW1 airmen who fell and who survived?

On thing I'd have liked them to explore in a bit more depth was 85 sqn giving McCudden the brush-off "because he wasn't a public schoolboy", but the same squadron then having Mannock as its CO?

Olaf

BTW - I don't know how the 'red button' feature works - i.e. whether it will be available on Iplayer etc, but there's not a bad walkaround of an SE5a to accompany the timewatch show.

Seeing as how it was about McCudden and Mannock... you might just forgive 'em for that one.

Albert Ball's name was mentioned in connection with the SE5a
The 'red button' stuff consisted of a close up of Hendon's SE5a.

I must plan my annual homage to the Graham White Factory at Hendon soon, if only they didnt have such restrictive opening times
