633 Squadron
Hello everyone
I'm just wondering if anyone has seen the movie 633 Squadron? I've read a little about it. It's about a Mosquito squadron late WWII. Does anyone know if it's any good?
thanks

Crappy plot with great footage of Mosquitos. Someone needs to compile all of the good aircraft scenes from all of the bad aviation films and create a sort of aviation porn flic.
Regards,
John

Wilks,
I've got the DVD. I saw this movie when it came out in 1964 and as kid I thought the movie was great. By today's standards some of the special effects are lame, but MAXIM08 is right. The story is "corny" at times and the actual flying scenes with the MOSQUITOS are very good. I will say this that 633 SQUADRON is not the worst war movie ever made so I say get the movie. I think you will enjoy it.

as above: a bit corny, but drooling over the aircraft footage is fun!
aside: when seeing the first StarWars movie, I thought that the DeathStar fight at the end looked familiar --can't recall exactly, but I think a lot of the elements seem lifted right out of 633...?

You're right. I've read somewhere (I can't remember where) that Lucas was influenced by the MOSQUITOS target run in attack scene in 633 SQUADRON for the climatic attack of the Death Star in STAR WARS Episode IV!

Although the novel---by Frederick E. Smith---is a masterpiece, and i feel the film, James Clavell (Shogun) had a hand in some part, was really very good.
No such Squadron of course, but typical of the Strike Wings routines.
Although most crews preferred the Beaufighter, as it was much more rugged when crash landing in the sea!
Dave.

Bloody music
I agree with all that has been said and would like to add that the last I watched 633 Suadron, I forgot how annoying it was that every time a Mosquito made an appearance, the bloody music starts up. Even when sat quietly in the background . . . dadadada dah dah!

Empire Strikes Back - WWI Influences
Going back to the Star Wars connection to 633 Squadron, I was wondering if anyone has ever thought of the ice planet Hoth battle sequence from "Empire Strikes Back" and how it resembles a WWI battle?
The rebels are essentially in a trench, with the equiviliet of artillary weapons backing up their rifles. Some of the tripod-mounted guns even resemble Lewis guns without the drum.
The Imperial AT-At Walkers are the equivelent of tanks.
The rebel snow-speeders, at least in configuration resemble WWI two-seaters with the gunner facing the rear.
Now if you think about it too much you will wonder why the Empire did not employ any close air support of their own...
Anyway, am I way off the mark here, or does anyone else out there see what I am seeing?
Thank you
