Canada Aviation Museum

Hello Everyone,

Today I had the pleasure of visiting the Canada Aviation Museum and having a look at some of their rare WWI aircraft.

A fair bit of time was spent investigating and photographing details on their original Sopwith Camel and Fokker DVII for reproductions around our museum but the series of pictures posted here are of the very unusual Junkers J.I.

This armoured ground attack aircraft is the only surviving example of its type in the world and sits in the storage/resoration hanger of the CAM next to their disasembled DVII and Bleriot.

On the main museum floor there is also the very impressive A.E.G. G.IV. Photos of this aircraft are to follow in a few weeks after my next trip.

continued...

Overall quite the fascinating aircraft. If anyone would like detailed photographs of a particular one of CAM's WWI aircraft feel free to let me know. If possible I'll try and get them on my return trip in a few weeks.

Their collection is listed here:

Cheers

Thanks for the pics and note Ed. I didn't know they had the auxiliary hanger open, last time I was there it wasn't. I also didn't know they had a carcase of a J1, that truely is worth the bus ride from downtown Ottawa.

Sincerely,

Hello Miles,

Its not open to the public, thats why I thought that these images might be of particular interest. My pleasure to share them though.

Cheers

The best thing has to be those corrugated wings.

Just amazing.

Ed,
I for one would like to get some close-up photos of the J.I, but I would love to be there in person to study it myself. The top wing looks like some of the camo paint is still visible? I would be interested to survey the whole top surface and try to reference what color is left to Methuen color chips (if possible). Then on to the structure.

Jan,

There is actually a fair bit of what appears to be original paint on the J.1 wings. Getting you access shouldn't be too much of a problem. They've been quite helpful in getting us access to their DVII and Camel in order to record details for the projects we're working on.

Let me know when you plan to be in Ottawa or are considering visiting and I'll do my best to join you and co-ordinate access to the J.1.

Cheers

Edward

Marvellous pictures of the Junkers J.I. The most interesting I found the seperate shots of the wings. I think this machine has had no restoration so should be in original state of painting, colours etc.

Why is it in storage and why is it almost not accessible for the public, because I have the impression from other pictures on the site of the Canadian Air Museum that it was complete and in good health.

The Museum has more aircraft than display space. I remember seeing the J1 on display assembled many years ago - couldn't tell you when - prolly twenty or more years ago. They rotate the displays - an aircraft will be out for a few years, then the wings removed and it goes back into storage, and something else is brought out. Great museum!!! Well worth repeated visits.!!
cheers,
shredward

Salmson 2A2

Hi,

Could anyone tell me what is the state of their Salmson 2A2 and whether it is currently on display (I could not find the information on their web site)
Apart from the one in Japan I am not aware of any other 2A2 and since my grandfather used it quite a bit I'd like to see one!

GrandSon.
