Exclamation Albatros D.III oeffag 253.01 - finished and on display now

WWI enthusiast are surely familiar with the name Koloman Mayrhofer. Since 14 years he (an also his team) works to realize a dream - a 1:1 repro of the famous Albatros D.III (Oeffag) a plane which wasn´t surviving the years.

After 14.000 hrs of researching, building and testing he has finished his project and his dream has come alive. You can see now this plane until the 2nd Sept 2007 in an special exhibition of the "Stadtmusem Wiener Neustadt" south of vienna. This museum gave an original Austro-Daimler 225hp flying-engine as a loan for this stunning project.
Its really phantastic to stand now in front of this phantastic built plane, which is an important part of aviation history. If you are in this area - a visit is def. a MUST!

Thanks to Koloman Mayrhofer and all others who made this dream come true.
Cheers
Walter

Walter,

That is a fantastic project. I was very impressed to see the level of craftsmanship achieved by Mr. Mayrhofer and his team.

What will happen to the plane in the long term, will it go to a museum?

Best Regards,
Phil

Kaiser Bill,

Have you built full scale Albatrii ( I love that word! ) replica's? If so, I'd like to talk with you about your experience.

Phil

Walter that plane is awesome. I`ve been to Vienna last year, but i would go again only for this plane. Do you know if it will stay there for a longer period?

vonSchaller ... this albatros 253.01 would be flyable but is planned to stay as static plane. It will be on display in the "Stadtmuseum Wiener Neustadt" until 2008. But I have no information about further plans. Maybe Koloman Mayrhofer himself (also a member of this forum) can give us some more information.

A second Albatros is nearly 75% completed. When finished it may become colourscheme and markings of 235.31. This second Albatros will go to france to get there a flying licence .... good luck for THAT COOL THING!!

cheers
Walter

Talking What a perfect work this one is !!!

I will be in Vienna in September. Where will it be by then? This is magnificent work. I need to see it up close. Do they have more like that there (in any museum) ? I have been there before, but I didn't have time to search for such exhibits as I am always on business trips and tight schedule. This time I can "hide" for a couple of days.

MY QUESTION WAS ANSWERED BY FLUGWUZZI JUST WHILE I WAS POSTING IT. This is what they call immediate response. Thanx (I LOVE THIS SITE).
Regards everyone !

One more reason...

...to go to Vienna (apart from Mozartkugeln and Sachertorte)
I always loved the woodwork of the fuselage. Can you discuss the front-end of the fuselage, the contours of which are normally "capped" by a spinner. Here the metal encasing the engine seems to be rounded off where the crankshaft protrudes (behind the propeller hub). thanks!
