Turkish Air Force Museum

Has anyone here been at the Yeşilköy Museum of Aviation in Istanbul. This museum has an unique original example of the Russian Grigorovich M 5 flying boat, which was seized by the Turkish during the Great War.

To appetize the machine here is an admittedly awful picture of the machine obliterated by a big crowd of visitors (tourists ?).

Picture comes from GRIGOROVICH M5 .. WW I Period TUAF AIRCRAFTS 1 nci dunya savasi dönemi Turk HvKK UCAKLARI

istanbul

thanks varese, for pointing this out... i have been to istanbul a number of times in recent years but was not aware of this collection. is it part of that prominent institution, the turkish national military museum?

p.s. the people in front, while obscuring a view of the plane, look entirely happy (as would we be if we had the chance to be there!) =0)

Flying boat

The hull of this boat appears to have been highly modified or replaced by one of Turkish origin.

Colin, interesting I checked it out in this collage.

The rudder is different from the original Russian Grigorovich M 5 and it seems that from the hull the step that can be seen in the drawing is not so extreme in the original. This is another reason why one of our forumites if he/she is in the neighbourhood, photograph all details of the machine. By the way it is said that the machine is an M 5 but it may of course have been another mark too

Crankcase, I have searched out what I could but it is not very exact. The museum is called 'Turkish AF Museum, Yesilkoy, Istanbul'. Yesilkoy is now a suburb of the gigantic city of Istanbul, but around 1912 this was the cradle of military aviation in the Ottoman empire. Hope someone can pinpoint where this museum is.

dear varese

thx for your reply, which i just now saw (i am bad at tracking responses, they seem to come off the forum front page in a flash). i will investigate the location of the istanbul location. after all, this is sort of my neck of the woods (along with the bulgarian brothers - yavor - down south).
