Today's Action at Kingsbury Aerodrome
Hello All,
I just returned home from a fun day at the Kingsbury Aerodrome (Texas). The Fokker Dr.I was rolled out and started. After a brief run-up, Roger Freeman took it out onto the grass strip for some taxi runs. Roger made several (6 or 7 as I recall) runs. On the next to last, he darn near got airborne............but backed out of the throttle at the last second. Please find the attached link to see some pics and videos. There were 20+ people there today, many taking video, so I'll post more when it becomes available. The video labeled "Eight Good Cylinders" was taken a week or two ago, not today. I wasn't there when they ran the engine that day, but I had it on my computer, so I thought I would add it to today's photo album. Apparently, the engine was only firing on 8 cylinders that day. Leatherhead- Many thanks. I assume eight good cylinders means one was not sounding good. Dr.I is beautiful with an attractive mix of Jasta B, Jasta 6, Jasta 10 and serial and WNs. Did they do the LeRhône themselves, or did they have some help?
The more rotary Dr.Is, the better. The sound of a rotary just cannot be matched. You can see in the last video how much castor oil was being used. It is all over underneath the aircraft on the ramp. The Dr.I windsock in one of the stills is a really nice touch. Have to make it out there sometime. Is there a good website with directions on how to reach the facility? My mother lives in Garden Ridge, not too far away. Taz Terry Phillips |

Willem- Rotaries were total loss lubrication systems. They spit out over a gallon of burned, partially burned, and unburned castor oil every hour, assuming they were running correctly.
