Engines collection
Hello,
my name is Giuseppe Genchi, I am restoring the collection of the DIMA (Department of Mechanical, University of Palermo). I am also working to create a little museum to expose the collection.
I hope that you can help me on searching information, technical data and drawings of the engines of the collection.
I would make some posters to explain how the engines are made.
You can see a part of the collection on flickr, I can not post the link! You can find it by searching my nickname "Sapiroci".
The aero engines of the collection are:
1) Siemens & Halske Umlaufmotor - Sh.III
2) Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft - Mercedes D.IV
3) Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft - Mercedes D.IVa
4) Basse & Selve - BuS.IV (bore 155 mm)
5) FIAT Aviazione - A.50
6) FIAT Aviazione - A.74 RC.38
7) FIAT Aviazione - A.80 RC.41
8) Daimler-Benz - DB 605

Hi Giuseppe, I did multiple searches on Sapiroci, Palermo, engines, etc. on both Flickr and Google, but they returned nothing -- can you hand-type a link url here to get us started?

paolomiana beat me to posting the link -- that's got to be the most perfectly preserved Mecedes D.IV in existence. Looks like it could be restored to running condition.

I saw the Mercedes D.IV of the Museo della Scienza e della Tecnica Leonardo da Vinci (Milan, Italy)...it is incomplete and I thought it would be beautifull to restore the "mine" to runnig condition. But this work is very difficult and expensive, I do not think it is now possible.

I'm thinking Albatros D.V or LVG C.IV -- both big, beautiful two-seaters, both reputed to be excellent flyers and either of them a perfect project for TVAL. A replica Alb or LVG airframe with an original Mercedes D.IV engine in flyable condition would be beyond priceless.

I've seen photos of the Milan engine also, and Krakow and the IWM exhibit; yours is obviously more complete and in far better condition than any of these -- that can be seen even from small photos.
Giuseppe, please don't discard the idea of a complete restoration to running condition -- there are people with the experience and facilities to do this and others with the money to make it happen. Your Mercedes D.IV is a real treasure and if there is a way to again make it operable, it belongs in an airframe. It was a unique engine in it's time, as were the aeroplanes equipped with it. Please keep an open mind on this, and consider it with great care. I'm sure that you will eventually be contacted by others who will want to have a serious discussion with you on this topic.
