Hello from the Cornpatch; aka Iowa

This has to be the best site on the net! I'm a 57 year old Navy vet; Corpsman, hence the Doc handle. Early aviation, especially WW I, has been nearly an obsession to me since early childhood. I don't KNOW much, but definately interested. There's a small museum near me in Hampton, Ia. Mr. Doyle has a replica Dr I and Neiuport; but many original engines and other artifacts. He has several sections of original fabric from original planes, including the Sioux Chief insignia from a plane of the Lafayette Escadrille. Is it heaven? Just a museum in Iowa, but close.

Doc,
Welcome to the Aerodrome, this is a fun place. Check out the archives when you get time. That museum sounds interesting, I had not heard of it before. Hopefully I can visit it someday.

Thank you for a most refreshing welcome. The museum in Hampton, Ia., is a private affair but Mr. Doyle does showings by appointment. If anyone will be in north central Iowa, I'll be happy to pass along the phone number.

Hi There,

A hearty welcome to the Forum from another Iowan (I live in St. Charles, a very small town south of Des Moines)!

I've been to Ed Doyle's museum a couple of times, and you're right - a very well-hidden little bit of heaven in Iowa! He has a Sopwith Pup as well; I believe some (or all) of his replicas were built by Jim and Zona Appleby, and they were once all airworthy and frequently flown. It's a treasure.

Hope to see you back here often.

Greg

Doc welcome to the 'drome. As an ex-navy airdale, its good to have you on board. I served a good deal of my time aboard the Constellation (CVA64) on Yankee Station in 'Nam.

This is the place to learn and have all your WW1 questions asked...both historically and model-wise.
