Question Anthony Jaques Mantle DFC

I have just joined this very informative site, and have posted a picture of my father, who was a pilot in the RNAS, in front of what I think was his aircraft. Is anyone able to identify it for me please?
Many thanks

Hi Tom
Thanks for your welcome. The picture is with my profile page - is there somewhere else I'm supposed to post it?

The plane in the picture appears to be a Royal Aircraft Factory R.E.8 or it could also be a Be2.

They were 2-seater observation plane that werealso used as a bombers and ground fighters.

The open engine and 4-bladed prop are pretty unique to these birds.

Also welcome to the boards. I just joined myself!

I'm going to say that it's a B.E.2, the R.E.8 is closed in at the front and rounded when the picture of the plane in Sally's profile is open at the front like the B.E.2.

I have a photo of a BE2 with a closed cowl on the front. I thought maybe it could be both because that piece may be taken off for what ever reason.

Nice grab Al. I too feel it is a BE2 or a BE12. The BE12 was single seat version of the BE2. You cannot really tell the seating arrangement with this photo.

Thank you so much for your replies and welcome! I had always thought it was a DH9 or 9a, because that's what he used to fly - but realised I was mistaken when I checked out the aircraft pictures on this site. Hence my question.

It was maybe the aircraft he used when he was stationed in Lemnos or Baku - he did reconnaissance in Baku after the war, before being captured by Bolsheviks and taken to Moscow!

I've also got a picture he took of a large tri-plane I can't identify - I'll try to upload it too.
Thanks
Sally

Howdy Sally

Dear Sally, Without seeing the photo of the triplane, I am guessing that it could be a Sopwith Triplane since they had a high profile cmpared to Anthony Fokker's copy. Also the triplane was a favorite amongst the Royal Navy's squadrons. Good luck. If I can help you give me a shout since I have several images of pilots and planes and I share what I have. Maybe these could help you out in search. VR, Scott Price, a.k.a. Roadhog
