52 squadron royal flying corps
please could someone help me find out about 52 squadron royal flying corps, my grandfather(Thomas A Lea 2nd class airmech) served with them WW1, and won the MM, i can find him in the London Gazzette but nothing about the 52nd squadrons duties and whereabouts in france, please could someone help or point me in the right direction......

Hello Paul,
Here's a start for you, others may know more. 52 squadron flew RE8 two seaters -"harry tates" on bombing & reconaissance missions. The order of battle for 8 August 1918 shows the squadron to have been attached to the Canadian XVII corps. They were then stationed at Le Hameau & were commanded by Major A.M Morison. Daryl |

A little more: 52 Sqn were based at Meaulte (near Amiens) as part of 4 Brigade and in support of XV Corps as of April 1917. For the Third Ypres they were at Bray Dunes (on coast) still part of 4 Bde and still in support XV Corps. At the beginning of the Spring German offensives they were at Golancourt on Brit Fifth Army front in support of XVIII Corps. Cheers Russ

Interesting side note.. according to The Vintage Aviator No.52 Sqn was the first to be issued Harry Tates.
RE.8 History | The Vintage Aviator Nothing else I could really see about No.52 that has not been covered here already, good luck in your research. |
