brisvegas calling!!
hi all.....just a quick note to introduce myself....and perhaps find a few others with the same particular fascination for WW1 aircraft....and their fliers. particulaly interested in all things ALBATROS DVa....dont know why???...just am!.
Fascination with the amazingly leading edge design for "that" time....its about one of the few things that is constantly on my mind.....apart from my wife and kids ...that is!!!!
Living down here in Brisbane, Australia. Seems there are a few other lads from those parts on these forums.....hope to touch base at some stage......looking to do a scratch build of the Albatros DVa pretty soon....and this is just an amazing place to gather comments, feed back....ask questions...and generally get some great asistance on all the tricky bits!!
Anyway.... thats a bit about me....talk soon.

Chase down sheppo on PM, he's building one in Australia.
I worked on the one that is at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
Beautiful aircraft, but I'm not sure I"d like to fly one. There's more than a few "don't do's" that 20/20 hindsight have taught the aero industry in the last 90 years or so...

Hi Flug Werke,
thanks for the welcome! I've been away on business for a while....had a couple to get online in china....just never enough time to really get back to anyone.....
I have sent Sheppo a message. hoping for a response. I would love to get involved in an Albatros build.....perhaps get some real motivation upon seeing Sheppo's build. He's here in OZ.....so maybe getting along to see his build would be the straw that breaks the camels back...and gets me into building one myself....!!!
again.....thanks and any pointers you may have etc...would be greatly appreciated.
regards,
szczepan

Welcome
Hi,
Welcome to the Aerodrome! Sorry about the full inbox. I will have to clean it out again. I have been to see the Albatros D.Va that Chris is building, and it really is inspiring. I would like to build one but the biggest issue I have is a lack of space. I had a hanger organised but it fell through. Following a discussion with a friend of mine, who I have been talking to about First World War aeroplanes to for a long time now, it might be possible to build one at his house. He has an ideal area set up, and out of the blue he told me on Monday that he is looking for another project, so that might be a solution to the space problem. The Albatros is not a very easy aeroplane to research in some ways, but it is possible to compile a reasonable set of drawings from the information available. There are many unknown structural details, but I am sure it is possible to construct an aeroplane which is as strong as the original. It probably doesn't have perfect flight characteristics either but it sure is a very nice aeroplane and would fly well, especially since there would be no one chasing you, and firing at you.
Cheers,
David.

contact!!! thanks for blog
David,
many thanks for the contact. I've been following the discussions about the Dva build by Sheppo and Koloman's DV build on the common thread.... this has truely inspired me to start me on my own journey and hopefully a DVa build of my own.
I would be interested in knowing what is the best current set of plans to be working from? I have a copy of the Bob Waugh drawings. You suggested that there were other drawings and more current?...or additional drawings?...where do i even start looking for that information?
i have tried to contact Sheppo, however, i havent had any luck to date as i suspect he has a full mailbox and my messages just get dumped ......
considering you and sheppo are in australia? and around the sydney area....I am in brisbane....i would love the opportunity of being able to visit Sheppo's build at some stage. Hopefully might get the opportunity to ask him sometime soon. I do appreciate your contacting me ...and dont mid if i jump in and ask the odd question.
regards,
looking forward to a future dialogue on this fascinating aircraft.

Hi David,
I sent you a message concerning a little problem that someone we all know has.
See this:

You are about the second person today that has claimed this.
Cheers, Jay

deciding on the build....
Hi FokkerJ,
well, I started initially thinking that i was going to build an RC model of the Albatros DVa at approx. 1/3 scale. .....but having reviewed these forums and seen all the fabulous work being done.....I am truly considering a 1:1 build. Maybe I am crazy, but considering the interest and general enthusiasm of the people on this forum, then that would mean a lot of people are crazy!!!...hahahhaha.
seriously - I would consider building at 1:1 as i currently have suffiecient space to build the components...but probably not enough space to assemble into complete aircraft. So i would imagine, i would end up needing some larger space at some stage.
I have a lot of patience, there is obviously some specialist skill required in certain areas, but i feel that generally I have the understanding of how to go about most of the build. Engines and radiators etc...will become a whole new experience....together with the fuel systems, electronics etc...but that is where I think i will need to develop specific knowledge through the build.
I have sort of jumped off the deep end in this regard.....but i cant see any alternative if one is to approach this particular topic....there is no real "soft" way into building this baby!
So thats me.....like most of the enthusiasts here...probably working during the day, family commitments....then building either at night, weekends....or on their sickies from work...hahaha
i would appreciate any help, support or conversation on the topic..and again thanks for touching base!!!!
regards,
szcz

Upper wing you're looking at 9 metres or thereabouts uninterrupted. Will not fit in a somestic double garage, even on the diagonal.
Most of the rest, a garage workspace could accomodate.
Having been up close and personal with the real thing in intimate detail I'd be happier building a yacht than an Albatros.
Big and scary job.
Awesome, beautiful, but definitely a big and scary undertaking.
