COOOEEEE from Sydney, Australia
Hi everybody !
i was trawling through the internet, trying to find information on The Red Baron, when i stumbled on this site.
I must say- Thank you to ALL who have contributed to this site. It is a wealth of information, and it is greatly appreciated =)
Currently i'm working on my Major Historical Investigation project [or Major HIP]for Modern History [im in year 11 in high school ] nothing flash, just a 2000 word essay on a question we have to make and answer.
The question is...
*drum roll*
"Does the Legend of the Red Baron have any factual basis"
Yes, i noe what your all going to say, this naive young man, thinks the Red Baron dosen't exist. Quite the contrary, his legend is awe inspiring, i just decided i wanted to talk about the whole propaganda use of the Red Baron side of his legend, and there was a thread some time ago, about Manfred and some things he commited in his autobiography i.e the whole Monk killing episode. I'lll include that to have a much more varied oppinion on the Baron AND it'll make for a much more controversial answer that will be so much more interesting
SO
it would be greatly appreciated, if anyone, with information about the Red Baron in those aspects, could maybe give me some pointers on where to start looking, who to contact and talk to and yes thank you for everything guys ! feel free to contact me as well, cause I too as young as i am, find certain aspects of WW1 quite interesting, and have many set oppinions about certain aspects, especially the causes and certain Military maneouveres [especially Galipoli] that i would love to share, and get some feedback on
Thanks everybody !
Dani

Welcome to the Aerodrome! I hope you find all you need for your paper! The thread on the Monks is interesting but one should remember that if any actions described in the book were truly considered as a crime in the conflict with the current (rules of war), I feel the episode would have been edited from the book. In My very humble opinion, MvR was a soldier who did his duty for the Fatherland, led by example, and was extremely successful at what he did! For those involved in the other thread, please do not high jack this thread, rather attack me on the MvR and Luck thread.
Thanks,
RAGIII

Mate,
You might start with the search feature in the 'drome' under richthofen and read all of the tags that it finds.

Hi ,Boredishboi ,..All you have to do is " Stick to what little facts as they are , no more , no less , and without any bias or conjecture ,etc. "....If you approach it in an even handed way with an open mind then you can't go far wrong and will have the makings of a historian worthy of the name .
Best of luck...John

hey john =)
thankyou,
the main problem im having though, are the bare facts, are they everything that is accepted..? Peter Kilduff's works are accepted as the best source of information on the Baron, should i stick to the ones he mentions..?
See for my essay i'm splitting it into 3 parts which i have titled
"The Leader "&
"An Ace of Hearts..?"
"The Hero"
as i go through, i will quote parts of the legend for the three parts and compare it to the facts that are accepted. I'll also add in the factor of propoganda, and how the Red Baron was used as part of the Kaiser's propaganda machine.
Any comments on this John..? or anyone else. Everybody feel free to share some ideas, im willing to learn
Dani

Hi Dani,..This could get to become a very contravertial subject so easily .It will be difficult to remain even handed without being accused of taking the other side , but you have to remain true to what facts that you uncover ...Forget the embelishments and conclusions of others , they may be taken from one or other perspective , and less value than those of someone such as yourself , looking at it afresh , without preconcieved ideas ...Learn to destinguish between fact and heresay ,; propoganda comes from all sides and the BEST of it may easily fool you into believing it . Often , by introduction of one undisputed fact , one can be fooled into believing the rest , which may, of course , be pure invention .Question Everything , then when you have all the evidence you can reasonably gather , then, make your own conclusions .You will maybe find you have to be part detective , part judge/jury sometimes , ..Great temptation to be psycologist , however this is dangerous grounds to be on as it's not be any means , an exact science and can lead you astray.Best of luck in your endevour..Sincerely ..John.

G'Day Boredishboi,
Wilkommen to the Aerodrome.
Hi Dani, You've recieved hearty welcomes and I believe some very sound advice from both RAGIII and John McKenzie.
My first impression was that you should steer clear of any unresolved controversey such as the "Monk" episode, but as John has said:

I would suggest that you reread this and his first Post as many times as necessary and you won't go wrong. All great advice!
Perhaps you are the one to dig deeper and find out if this story was based on any factual happenings.
There are plenty of other episodes for you to choose from and concentrate your efforts on. A lot depends on how much time you have available and also your desire to invest that time.
You already have a three part rough draft.
You could create a list of "True and False" (backed up with facts and sources) or you could choose one subject/aspect per your three part to concentrate on. I personally would rather read up on one well researched item than a lot of lightly glossed over items, but that may just be me.

Also great advice from TC.
What ever you choose to do, I wish you the very best in your endeavors.
Remember, keep it fresh and objective.
Best Wishes, FOKKERJ
P.S. If you see someone in a thread that you need to contact for information, don't be bashful. You have the world at your fingertips here and I believe that most would be happy to help you in any way. Just state your desires and ask. I wish that I could be of more help.
