Nieuport 17 Cowl Variants?

Hi there, I'm a 'newbie' from Midland, ON, Canada. I am in the early stages of scratch building a 1/3 scale Nieuport 17 with as accurate detail as possible to Billy Bishop's plane.
I was wondering if anyone knows what the differences in the cowls on the Nieuport 17's signified? Specifically, some had the ribbed seams on the cowl at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions, while others were at the 1 o'clock and 11 o'clock positions. Was this a British vs. French version detail or just a change in design over time?

Thanks, Brian
